Lost my audio pc-tv connection

My pc (winxp pro) is connected via hdmi and audio cable s to my lg 42" tv using a yamaha amplifier. Upon completion of the wiring, all went well and I could hear/see pc movies on my tv. A few days ago, I've discovered that the audio connection is inactive. I checked the cable connections, and they seem ok. (I suspect that one of my recently installed applications changed a system parameter and blocked this audio connection leaving exclusively the internal speaker. (My pc doesn't have its own loudspeakers). Still, I did quite a few changes in my pc and I find it unpractical to uninstall a large number of applications)
How can I detect the source of the problem?
