Allmost all Compression Formats are Lossy, what makes a codec good is if it looses Video information in Places that is not noticed by the Naked eye..Mpeg-4 codecs are Very good this way (Mpeg-4 includes DivX and XviD and any other Mpeg-4 format) because even though they are extremely lossy they loose the Information in Places were it is Less Perceiveable...Mpeg1/2 are also Very good Compression Formats More Lossy than Mpeg-4 Formats but that is why Mpeg files have a Bigger Filesize to achieve the Same Quality...The Only Lossless Formats I know of are Raw Formats which use No or very Little Compression and in Most cases do not need a codec to decode them...The Best Lossless codec is the "HuffYUV" codec which is a Variation of the Intel-YUV codec which is basicly Raw Uncompressed YUV AVI, But with HuffYUV you can achieve up to 3:1 Compression with No Quality Loss that is why this is the Best Capture codec for Analogue Video capture, It is not a Practical codec for Internet Downloading or anything like than because it uses up to 400mb per minute of Video but it is better than 1.2gb for a Minute of Uncompressed AVI...Good Luck
