There is a strange behaviour writing DVD's with Impression DVD Pro. When I try to access a specific timecode with my DVD player on these DVD's, i.e. 1:30:45, the player does a step-by-step search to get there instead of going there precisely on an instant. Accessing chapters from the menu works instantly. Impression's online help says that a toc file is created to generate this information. I have this toc file but the result is not seen on the DVD.

I'm using a PAL MPEG-2 source with VBR-2 created with TMPGEnc which results in a quite small file (3.99 gigs for 1:33 hours).

Authoring the same file with TMPGEnc DVD Author or Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 SE works correct. A timecode specified can be accessed immediately.

The thing is that I need specific settings in my menu, so I want Impression to do the job. Is there a solution to fix the VOB/IFO files, maybe recalculation of the bitrate to time mapping? (I don't understand the features of IfoEdit, so I don't know if it can be done with it.)

I need your help, thanks.

Have you Tried something like "DVD-Lab" it has all of the Features as Impression pro But it is a Far superior Program and it has AC3 and DTS support which Impression doesn"t and it has More Detailed Menu options and you can be just Plain More creative with it..I own Pretty Much every DVD authoring Program out there and I have settled with DVD-Lab for doing most DVD"s (I own Probably 50 Different DVD authoring programs from Sonic Scenerest 2.7 $15,000, To TMPGEnc DVD author $69)....Cheers

Thanks for your suggestion, Minion. I didn't try DVD-lab before. It seems to have many of the features I expect.

What I'm really looking for is to fix the bug of the existing app (the Impression people are probably not interested to fix that in their own product).

Is there any other suggestion to post-edit the VOB files I get from Impression to recalculate the timestamps in the movie? Is ist i.e. possible to convert the movie from 25fps PAL to 30fps NTSC and back to 25fps PAL without any loss?

Well I really hoped that one app. is enough to author DVD movies ... but that's terribly wrong ;-(

So I'll give DVD-lab a chance - even if there is a fix for Impression ... Cheers

You Can easillt Turn a 25fps File into a 23.97fps File with no Loss but the Audio will be out of Sync after changeing the Frame rate..You can do it By just changeing the Header info with something like "DVD Patcher" but I don"t see what changeing the Frame rate will do cuz I believe the Problem is with Pinnacle not with the File..(I haven"t Found One Pinnacle Program that Wasn"t Buggy as Hell and I have Many of them, Like Studio 7/8, Pinnacle Edition 4.5 & 5, Pinnacle Impressions DVD pro, Pinnacle Expressions, Pro One, ECT)
Cheers

Sure the problem is with Pinnacle as it works with TMPGEnc DVD Author at a glance with identical input streams.

Your experiences with Pinnacle products don't seem to make you really happy. I like the GUI and the functionality and it is (quite) stable (DVD-Lab is not, I've got it crashed in the first 10 minutes I was using it!). That's the reason why I want to come around with Impression or Studio (which produces the same problem with the timecode).

Is there any tool to re-create all VOB-files (I think the timecode is tracked within the streams, right?) with a new calculation of timecodes and retain the menu already authored in the 1st VOB?

Cheers

That is Strange the DVD-lab is crashing on you But it could be because they recently updated to the 1.31 version and I still use the 1.15 version..But when I want to make more complex DVD"s I use "Sonic DVD Producer 3.51" which is an awesome Authoring Program well it should be at $4500 ..I don"t know about adding Timecodes to the VOB files but you can add new Time codes to the Mpeg2 files before you author it to DVD buy useing a Feature in a Program called "Mpeg2VCR" it has a Feature called the "Gop fixer" which analizes the mpeg file and rebuilds the Timecode index by fixing any Audio and Video PTS errors, It will also fix any Gop"s that are not withing the DVD Specification...It wouldn"t work on VOB files because the Chapter Points would be lost..As For Pinnacle Products I don"t hate them I just Find them a Bit Mickey Mouse and Lacking in any Profecinal Features..I work as a Video Editor For a Studio In Vancouver and we get copies of most Pinnacle Programs as Promotinal Offers trying to get us to Buy the Software for all of our Editing Work stations so I get to Try and even take home a lot of it and have never been really happy with most of it accept for I dod like the Features of Pinnacle Edition 5 and it"s Interface But it was a Bit Buggy and crashed Often and it would not import AVI files unless they were DV or Uncompressed AVI but the Software Looked really good But you need a Really Fast CPU to get it to work to it"s Potential Like 2 Dual P-4 3.0ghz with 2gb of Ram...well anyways Good luck...Cheers

Thanks again. I've given up fixing Pinnacle Impession's output as I've got DVD-lab working.
When I realized that ReStream-ing my MPG files was not successful with Impression and patching the IFO's with IFOEdit wasn't also much better (just a little bit, the SAP didn't go into hangup after that) I completely moved to DVD-lab.
This is a less intuitive process (for me) but works fine ... and the menu features are quite interesting for my needs.
Cheers.
