My current system is a 750 Mhz Athlon with 256 Mb PC100.

I finally decide to get a DVD writer, narrow it down to the new plextor, get as far as the order screen when i notice the minimum system spec is 700Mhz. Checking other products from pioneer, lg etc, i find most drives require similar high system specs.

Why?

I realize that writing data to a dvd is more taxing than writing a CD but surely, data transfer to any optical drive is a fraction of the transfer rate to and from hdds using the same cables and controllers.

My main use for the drive would be in writing data to and from DVD+/-R, Cd etc. Ripping and making (legal) backup copies.

Can anyone clue me in on the reasons for the high spec requirements and if my system is capable of handling DVD writers in general and the plextor specifically.

Thanks in advance.
