My grandparents dvd drive would no longer open, it would make noises and try but with no success.
so I took an extra dvd drive from my old computer which I know works 100% and installed it into their computer.
The drive is recognised and has the latest firmware, yet it will not open either.
I know computers well and can usually diagnose my own problems but have no clue what would cause 2 different working drives to no longer open.
Any ideas?

thank you

Is there any packet writing software on the computer like Sonic DLA, Roxio Drag to Disc, or N ero InCD? They sometimes take control of the burner.

Also, try going into My Computer, right click on the drive, and click on eject.

There are no programs on the system as the original drive was a simple dvd-rom and they are in their 70's so no burning takes place.

I also forgot to mention that the drives will both open no problem if they are empty, but once a disk is put in, its not coming out without a paperclip.

Did you try going to My Computer and ejecting the drive tray?

Did you actually check to see if any of the programs I mentioned were on the hard drive?
