It could easily be a fake MS Pro Duo as there a more of those than flies in the Amazon Rainforest. Even I've had one of them, worked fine for like 2 weeks than it died.

One sure-fire way to test if it is, is to load it into a PSP if you have one, turn it on and hit the triangle button and select "Information".
If it says MagicGate is not supported it's a fake.

You can also tell if the printing on it looks very faded or worn out and the packaging has no hologram.
