I know this isn't the correct place for this question but, I couldn't get a reply from anyone in the Audio section. I'm sure someone here has a little insight on this.

Is there a notable difference in using digital optical for audio vs
using your standard monster cable red/white for audio? Just wanting to
know if it's worth forking over the high price for the cables. Also, I've found some cheaper TOSLINK cables going for 14 dollars. Is there any difference between the cheaper cables and the expensive ones? Better shielding maybe??

Setup:

I'll be going out my HD-DVD player to my receiver which then goes out to my speakers.

There's a BIG BIG difference especially if you're watching HD DVD's.

The red/white RCA cables carry only 2-channel stereo and nothing else.

The digital optical cable can carry 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 DTS from your movies. It's definitely worth it. (Unless you have only 2 speakers connected to your AV rcvr then it shouldn't make a difference.)

The cheaper cables should be fine for short runs.

Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate the advice. Yeah I have a 5.1 setup so it only makes sense to roll with the digital optical cable then vs the red/white. Also, I'm only going to need about 4ft of cable so there shouldn't be any interference. Thanks again!

That's why I like Coaxial Digital Cables. My rigs use those and I was able to use some old cheap cables I had laying around.
