Hello folks..quick question for you optical oracles out there. I have a new DVD drive and not a lot of deep knowledge about the inner workings. Can I now burn the larger blank DVD's that are 9.4GB in size (as opposed to the 4.7GB versions I've been burning for years)? I think so by reading the specs on it, but I am not too sure. well yes and no. according to windows its more like 8.5 gb. windows 1 gb = 1024mb and the rest of the world 1gb = 1000mb. i would say yes, who cares what bill gates thinks anyway.
I'm interpreting this as you are asking about ripping the larger Dvd-9 movies onto blank DL media. Let me know otherwise.
You gotta watch out for certain programs. What works good on single layer backups,may not work with dual layer. Early versions of Nero-Like Nero6.6 and below, have issues with the layer break.Early versions on Nero7 had tons of issues.
If you are talking about 9.4 gbs of actual data,it'll still have to be compressed. If talking about ripping a regular dvd-9 original for a backup copy,then you're talking about a 1:1 copy,no compression needed.Lots of confusion about the translation and conversion of the Byte. You'll notice the size difference if you suppose to have a 200 gb hd and windows tells you that its only 189 gbs, like mine does.
It's freeware,a very powerful ripper and a very nice DL burn engine.Very easy to use and a 1 program process unless you are backing up a very heavily encrypted movie. If you've used dvd decrypter in the past,it's very similar to ImgBurn:
1) Open Imgburn,Mode,read: Select your ripping drive as the source drive-in case you have dual drives. Take note of the destination,that'll be where you fish your MDS files from. Then click the disc icon on the lower left and it'll back it up to your harddrive-to that specific movie title.
2) After the ripping,click Mode/Write: Locate the 2 small folder icons. The right has a + for (queue),and small left folder icon (browse for file) is what you click on. Click it,locate your movie from your harddrive.When you locate that movie on the HD,You'll see 2 files for that movie.Top file is the ISO file,and bottom file is the MDS file. Click on the MDS file-highlight it-,open,and the title appears in the Label-she's set.
Then select your HP drive as the Destination. Set burn speed to 2.4x or 4x-slower is better when it comes to DL media.You can leave it verify or untick it-takes longer when verifying.When everything looks good,click the disc icon on the lower left side again.
You can also set the booktype there,but HP drives usually lack that capability.
It doesn't get much simpler than that for 1:1 copy DL backups. Problematic encryptions may be the exception.
BTW: DL backups are a totally different format. It can be trickier on some stand alone players..Keep this in mind in case you back your first one up and your player gives you a no disc error.
For this,I booktype mine to dvd-rom.Most HP burners lack this capability,unless they are rebadged liteys,benqs,etc.
