I'm helping a friend get an old IBM ThinkPa up and running for school and we need a least bloatedWindows install to run on 128MB PC133 but he's willing to put an additional 256mb if one slot is free or at least swap out for a 64mb. XP Pro SP2 is on t now and is slow cause of RAMand small HDD or 5GB and 40? RPM.

It came origional w/ 98 SE and we do still have to reload but wanted to install new aps if possible (Nero7 mobile and Adobe Creater for XP). Is is DVD and Wi-Fi ready so a good small OS install for basic office and DVD movie viewing is good for now.

An ideas welcome. Is XP student any smaller of install and less RAM use? what can run best on 128 for today till more RAM is aded?

Thankx in advance!

Cool I will look into this. What ntworking features can I get wth Tiny XP SP2? Will it take the same app as XP Pro as more RAM becomes available?

I do also have XP Tablet Edtion as a 2 CD set. I got it for my old P4 Notebook few years back but it had 1GB RAM and 80GB HDD. Anybody know how this will install and perform on an older P3 with 128RAM and 5GB HDD? Space wise it looks like it will fit> Since this will be use for work and school, it needs to have some sort of basic Wi-Fi networking features + print and files sharing installed and enabled.

It d run XP Pro SP2 and was fine when it had 384mb RAM. It was still kinda slow with some apps but IE 6 wa good enough. I just need to be able to run any version of XP with 128 for a few weeks tillI either find the sstick I removed last year or replace it.

Also I have camera 8m CF Micro Drives type I and II cards @ 150x for a Nikon D70s and I wanna' use one of them for a XP Boot disc on a CF to 2.5" IDE adapter (like the type you see on eBay) to replace the origional slow 3200rpm 5gb HDD.

Is it worth trying to put 98SE back in to run some basic office apps and DVD media players?

I Installed XP Tablet 2005 w/ SP2 and it still shows using 157mb RAM just after initial set up, not even any added drivers or apps yet. How can I thought Tablet was to use less then 128mb RAM closer to 64mb.

I found TinyXP and may try it later tomorrow if this is too slow till I find my lost RAM chip. Any links to guides on how to stop a lot of services and or strip down a new CD install?

Thankx. I rtied removing most Windows components I think I dont need, like Media Player, Outlook, MSN, Messenger, and games. I reinstalled Mozila Firefox 2 and WinAmp Pro 5.51 and it still uses up to 175mb in surfing the net but now less then 1.8g space on disc. I tested by stopping and disabling most services like Fast user switching, Themes, Windows sounds, and mesenger. It diodnt seam to have a big as an effect as I thought. maybe only 20mb ram in idle before I open anything.

I need to learn more oabout what moe services I can stop and disable and what to remove from start up to speed things up.

As mentioned, I need to be left with basic Wi-Fi and LAN connect to home, school, and coffee shops networks. I need to keep at least folder and file shareing. and any services required to run DVD video and music (light weight only).
