Hi all, wondering if Memorex DVD R+, the kind you can find at Walmart, etc. are worth using for backing up your movies? I have burnt a couple movies already and they look just as good as the original (thanks to losing the Menu, etc) and play in all the DVD players I've attempted so far. So are there any known bugs/complaints/etc with this brand or am I okay using them? I like the price, since I'm trying to backup my entire collection and store it out of the way? My new roomates are very careless with DVDs and I have many movies I'd like to keep in nice condition for a while.

No. Memorex is at the bottom of the barrel for blank dvd media. You might be able to go through the whole spindle without a bad burn, but with this brand, chances are good that you'll be lucky to get a 50% success rate. Also they will wear out faster. They'll start skipping, freezing, that kind of stuff. Alot of people on this site will tell you to use verbatim, or taiyo yuden, which you will find out is more expensive, but for good reason. Sometimes you can find them on sell. What I use is maxell. I get them at office depot when they put them on sell. Now, this brand is considered mid range for blank media, but I don't care. I do as you do and make up backups of my originals, and if I have bad burns, which usually is my fault, or the movie starts to play funky, I throw it away, and make a new one. At that point I'm only out 15 to 20 cents. Trial and error is what I suggest. If you're having good luck with memorex, and you don't mind a few bad burns and making new copies every once and awhile then stick with them. And also remember, try to keep your burn speeds between 4x and 8x. Most people will tell you not to burn past 4x, but I set mine at 8x and haven't had problem with that. I've tried many movies at 16x and never had success. The end of the movies would always start skipping. I suppose this depends on your burner to.

Disclaimer: I am not a Memorex FunBoy:)!
Let's not mistake the "Brand" with the Media ID. Brand means nada! What it should be added is that the "Memosux" reputation was earned by CMC Mag. manufactured discs that were branded Memorex. Even Verbatim had their discs made by CMC Mag back in 2002 or so, but they were smart enough to switch back to Mitsubishi. However, recently more RicoJPN Memorex are surfacing-especially if one buys some X16, as Memorex outsources now to Ricoh. Some people are rather fond of RicohJpn media. It is not worth the risk though, the probability of getting CMC MAG is too high. Just as an FYI.

Memorex +R:

Gotta watch out for certain rated speed. The older 8x and below, very difficult to know who actually made them with all their outsourcing. Theres some good ones, and some crappy ones.

Their newer +16x: So far,Ricohjpn-R03-004 is the only MID code I've ran into out of the last 3 or so batches.. All in all, I'd rate those +16x memorex up there with ritek and sony. They are still very decent media.

Next year? They may switch manufacturers-so memorex is a brand to be weary of.

Do you know if they have out any X16+R that are CMC Mag, or is a pretty safe buy, most likely to get Ricohjpn?

What speed are those Maxell discs that you are using? Have you checked the MID code? This might interest you...

The 16x +R Maxell i've used for so long in the RICOHJPNR03 guise can also be CMC MAG M01; i'd initially had a few bad ones (M01, have never had need to fault the RICOH) but all the M01 i've used since have been fine. I had initally (after said failures) vowed never to go near the Maxell again to avoid getting M01 (as previously my supplier could guarantee you only got RICOH if you wanted Maxell, now they can't, it's out of their control it seems), but at £12 for 100 it's very hard to be fussy, and there's still the bonus that when you buy the Maxell you'd still get RICOHJPNR03 (don't know how long for though)

I have used a couple 100s of Maxells X8, RITEK-R03-02. Bought them and burned them a while ago(a little over a year) at a closing store around here for $4-$5 for a 50 pack. Once in a while I pop one of those in my player to see if they still work. Haven't had a problem with them. RITEK is been good media for me.

I wouldn't say that memorex completely sucks. They are outsourcing to Richo for their 16X +R media now aren't they?

Read some of the posts above...that's what we were saying, don't mistake "Brand" for MID code. Memorex got the "Memosux" name for the CMC Mag dye, now Ricoh makes their X16+R discs.

Looking for chear disks? Head on over to your local Office Depot and pick up this week's special on thier inhouse brand, they code out to RICOH on the plus side, and the ones I bought last year were Ritek on the dash side. Bring in a couple of empty inkjet carts and you'll save yourself even more.
More info

Yeah exactly, yet some people are still saying they suck. I just don't want the OP getting a jaded opinion.

Well, some people are miss informed, or not informed at all, some have personal beliefs(biases) and prefferences. Fortuanately, unlike computers, we have free will and can make our own judgements after collecting all the information necessary. If people say "Memorex sucks", jusy like that, and then they go out and buy some discs made by CMC Mag and branded by...someone, just different than Memorex, because "Memorex sucks"-I have to say "BRAVO"! Happy burning!

I just popped open another 100 pk spindle of memorex +16x and they code as usual, Ricohjpn-R03-004. This spindle had a bonus of 2 blank DL's,and they code as Ritek-D01-001.

What is funny, my old 4X Memorex Media is made by Ritek, go figure. I think the third spindle I picked up was CMC and I haven't touched a Memorex since. Like the Lil' Green Goober says, It's a crap shoot with Memorex, who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Memorex sources from Ritek and CMC and sometimes Prodisc and MBI. All DL discs are from Ritek.

Ritek makes the RicohJPN discs. Ricoh owns the stamper; just because the discs say "JPN" does not mean they are made in that country. Ritek also has a deal manufacturing Maxell discs. Maxell no longer sources from Japanese manufacturers simply because it costs too much.

Verbatim still sources most of their discs from CMC and now MBI as well. The Verbatim DL discs are made in a Singapore factory and recently in MBI's New Delhi factory. Although the M-code states "MCC," that only identifies the stamper, not the location of the factory that made the discs.

The M-code identifies the stamper and lots of other good information on the data code area such as write strategy, dye type, speed rataing, and so forth. It says nothing about disc quality. A disc with a particular M-code can represent an excellent batch or a poor batch. Whether or not the disc works well or at all on a particular drive depends on either compatibility or quality or both. It is not a simple matter to determine which it is, but the automatic assumption on this site is that it is the "quality" of the disc, even in cases where known incompatibilities exist.
