Open the fan area of it and completly clean it out. Take that thing apart and completly clean it apart if the 1st doesn't work. You CAN rinse the fan under water and let it dry before you put it back into the laptop. I have rinsed at least 20 fans and have never lost one.

I usually just take it apart and rinse out the fans and wipe off the other dust. I don't like using compressed air because that just blows the dust inside the laptop. Any way that removes the dust from the laptop is ok.

Could also be your fan or heatsink dying, maybe faulty connectors, not enough thermal paste on the processor, etc... a number of things. Hard to say really, you need to open it up and see.
What's certain is it's not your graphics card overheating, it's definitely the CPU or some component of it, (could also be the system fan), as it occurs when your computer is virtually idling.
Also monitor your CPU temp. with an app like Everest (freeware). See if your doing anything in particular when it starts to spike...

Its going to heat up on the couch because all the air vents are blocked. I have a Inspiron E1505 that heats up when its on my bed but doesn't overheat because it has the Core 2 Duo processor with air vents by the keyboard. What brand/model is your laptop and what processor is inside?

From what I remember, Celeron processors do stay cool but not as cool as the Core 2 Duos (ironic) Try using it on a table or get a laptop cooler for it. Are there any air vents on it besides the ones on the bottom? It'd be great if you could upload pics.

i wish i could take a pic but i can't find my cam. it has the one vent on the bottom where the fan is of course, and another vent on the side (not sure if that is used to cool or not)

the 1 at the bottom takes air in and the 1 on the side blows it out
when it stars blowing hot air the fan isn't getting enough air 2 it-when it stars overheating it helps 2 left the side with the fan port/hole on it up so it can get more air- about shutting down i have never had my laptop shutdown on me from overheat-the best thing i could says is go get a docking station and when your away from it don't cover the fan and u should be right
i hope i helped

Did you build this laptop yourself, because it sounds like something isn't seated properly?
The fan could be dying or it is not seated correctly on top of your heatsink for some reason. When you open it up have a look closely at your CPU and make sure the corners of the fan aligns dead straight with the corners of the CPU socket, otherwise it could mean it's become a bit loose and isn't ventilating properly.
Also, covering any of your case ports is going to give you bad ventilation so don't cover it up.
Does your laptop have a system fan as well?

Use Sensorsview instead: http://www.stvsoft.com/index.php?option=...id=17&Itemid=33
It monitors the temps of your CPU, northbridge, motherboard, graphics card and hard disks, as well as voltages and fan speeds, plus it supports a huge array of Mobos.
The trial version is unlimited and has all the above mentioned features.
