Just installed a ASUS DVD/CD-RW drive. Model # DRW-1814BL

I've downloaded the latest drivers from the Asus website but my player still won't read DVD's.

The most up to date firmware for that drive-according to my source-is 1.13

Not much info to go by:

1)What OS you running?

2)What kind of dvds? Originals,Backups?

3)What's the brand name and model # of that player?

If they are backups copies:

4)What's the brand name, format, and speed rate? Use neroinfotool or this free program to tell us:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm

5)How fast did you burn them?

6)How were these made? Ripping original dvds, avi's,etc?

7) Programs used to make those backups?

8)Using your Asus drive, will it play those dvds? Also test out in other drives: Pc's,Game consoles, stand alone players, etc.

9) Slapping any sticker labels on them?

I DO have firmware 1.13 downloaded for this drive.

I'm running XP Proffessional Service Pack 2

I'm just trying to play orignal dvd's. Not burned ones.

You said your player wouldn't play your dvds. I thought you meant a stand alone player.

Codecs issue?

What program you using while trying to watch a dvd?
Windvd,powerdvd,nero showtime,etc?

Yha sorry. Its not a standalone player. Its an ASUS Optical Storage DVDRW drive. I'm trying to use Windows Media player to play the DVD's.

I figured Asus included software that read DVD's but I guess they don't. The drive can "read" dvd's but its not equipped with the software to do so?

I have an up to date DivX codec pack. So I have to buy Windvd or powerdvd?

Windows media player will usually attempt to play them.. but not always..

Try this free one before you pay out.. also link for codecs.

codecs aren't my specialty. I've never had any issues with all my pcs. I've always used Windvd, but it usually came bundled with my pc or I'd pay $5 for an OEM disc on ebay that would work great.. Anything above Windvd4 is an awesome playing software.

I've got a couple powerdvd oem discs laying around. I never even tried them. There should be some good free ones out there.

I think this one comes down to the simple "no dvd player is installed" error that media player will throw out if a dvd is inserted with autoplay on. Lots and lots of free dvd playing apps out there.. it's unusual TBH to come across a machine that doesn't have nero showtime or some other dvd playing software on it, even if it has never had more than a cd burner fitted in the past.

There will be no need for an actual device driver.. xp comes with all the ide drivers as standard.. quick test.. play an ordinary audio cd in it.

I built the computer myself so I purchased this DVD-RW drive seperately. It runs audio CD's fine. Windows media player basically IS just saying "There is no DVD player installed". I'll take a look at the links you provided Varnull. Thank you. I just find it odd that the Drive has the ability to read DVD's but failed to come with the software to do so.
