Sorry, I'm kind of new to these forums and burning in general. I've seen a lot of discussions/posts that say Brand X dics made in Tokyo are good, and made in India are bad, or things to that extent. Can anyone explain this to me, which location is better and why? And how do you know where it's made, just looking on the outside of the packaging?

Also, I've been seeing that Taiyo and Verbatim are two respected brand names, is that still true? And if so does the location on those matter? Finally where could I order blank media either online or what stores carry those brands?

Thanks in advance. If this has been answered just link pls, thanks.

Usually people look for media made in Japan becasue it means that they will usually receive Taiyo Yuden or Hitachi DVDs. I think there are a couple other good discs out of Japan (correct me if I'm wrong guys) like Sony's DVD-R media and possibly some Richo discs. Hitachi DVDs are no longer in production though and most brands that outsourced to Japan to have their media made by Taiyo Yuden no longer do so. The easiest way to get Taiyo Yudens is to order them online from sites like supermediastore. If you want Hitachis you'll have to look around for Japanese made Maxell brand DVDs that are in the 8X variety (very rare these days)

Verbatims are primarily made in 3 locations, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia. The Malaysian plant is only making dual-layered Verbatim MKM discs these days from what I've heard while the Taiwan and Indian plants produce the single layer DVDs. The India plant is operated by MBI which has a reputation for manufacturing lousy discs while the Taiwanese plant is operated by CMCmag which also has a lousy rep around here but does a good job making Verbatims. Many people have claimed that the India MBI produced Verbatims are of lesser quality than the Taiwanese Verbatims. I don't know if those claims are true but I trust the opinions of the master burners here at AD so I'll do my damnedest to be ensure I get Made in Taiwan Verbatims.

One of the members here by the name of JoeRyan can give you a very in-depth and detailed answer about the variations in the manufacturing plants

Good stores to order online:
Supermediastore
Meritline
Newegg

I use newegg myself since they have 8X DataLifePlus Verbatims readily available for dirt cheap.

@Addicts, correct me if I'm wrong about my info. :P

Thanks for the info, I went ahead and ordered 100 of the Taiyo Yuden from supermediastore. Assuming they work out, and I'm betting they will, I'll go ahead and get enough next time to back up my entire collection.
