Can't play DVD-R anymore

I have an LG DR1F9H that I have had for a couple years without any problems. Just recently I noticed that I am no longer able to play anything but commercial DVDs on it.
None of my back-ups or home DVDs will play on it. Nothing has changed that I know of, I reset it to factory defaults. I have also tried old dvds that I made before that used to work but now don't.
I really don't want to buy a new recorder quite yet and was hoping someone else might have experienced the same thing.
