I have an external hard drive by seagate and i have had it for awhile, and the problem is that i havent used it for a couple of weeks and then i tried to use it again and now the light on it will turn on and after about 5 seconds it will start to pulse from on to really dim. I have absolutely no clue what is wrong with it and if anybody else knows what could be wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Disconnect everything. Reconnect making sure connections are secure..
If problem persists, the drive is probably bad now..

Is it a factory Ext HD ?

or is it a desktop drive put into an enclosure ?

If it is a desktop drive you put into an enclosure... take her out and put into your PC to see if it works.

it's probably a factory made external hard drive, but try that procedure anyway.

Its a 500 gig factory external hard drive by seagate. I imagine that it has just gone bad, but i just didnt know if there was anything else that i could try. I tried as GRAKEL2K8 said and re-tried all the connections but that didnt change anything. Thanks for all of the help though.

One final thing.
Check the voltage output from that power adapter thing.
Then if you can get the drive out of that case, see if you can get it to run from the main computer. I use long cables so I can open the case, then connect the drives to test, lazy way. I use some old motherboards and win98 HDs for some toying around too. I don't trash a drive until it is dead. Really dead. I even have some 200 megabyte drives packed in a box somewhere in the garage.

Yep! Still have a 386 mobo with 2 MEG of ram.<Maxed out!> heh heh It's on top of my bookcase. Gonna try to throw out a couple wheelbarrows full of ISA i/o cards soon. I really need to...But!!
Actually threw out some 200 meg HDs last month, I THINK!! I'm using the [Guamanian method]. Set stuff out in the rain/wx 'til it's ruined, then it's okay...Over there the humidity and salt air ruin stuff pretty quick.
