so im looking for DVD-R or DVD+R (because i cant really tell the difference and DVD+RW are more expensive) and i want to know what brand is good and what isn't. so far, after looking around here at AF, i figure that memorex is the worst. and that verbatim and taiyo yuden are like top notch stuff. but i saw some other brands like RITEK, TDK, Gearhead, and others. are those mid-range stuff? i also read maxell is mid-range, but works well too.
also, where do you guys get your discs? like in stores like fry's, office depot/max/supplies, best buys, ect. whenever theres a sale? or would buying it online be cheaper? if it is, where? looking around, i found stuff like verbatim are around $35 for 100-pack DVD+R online. thanks.

read the forums here you will fine plenty of info
yes Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are the best theres really no reason to get anything else. TDK code out the same as memorex nowadays avoid them. in the B&M stores get Verbatim or if you can find Sony or Fujifilm thats Made In Japan.(they will code out as Taiyo Yuden) Sony MIT are ok and most Maxell aren't so good. as fas as online go with Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim you can get them for about 23 to 25 cents each. also buying online takes the guess work of trying to fine Taiyo Yudens.
the best places are....

ZoSoIV--
"DVD-R" was supposed to be pronounced as "DVDR," just the way the CD-R is pronounced. There was some early concern among DVD Forum Members that there might be some confusion with DVD-RAM; but before anyone got used to either medium, HP, Sony, and Philips split from the Forum's chosen formats. They objected to the clumsy way the DVD-RW handled data as a sequential video format. It took too long to format and erase, and new data could only be appended to it--no allowing files to be erased to make more room. They introduced the DVD+RW as a video/data format, and they emphasized the "plus" with a clever marketing strategy. If it were a plus, the other format had to be a "minus." DVD Forum members became very heated when "minus" was used, and Andy Parsons of Pioneer frustratingly corrected anyone who made that mistake. Forum members insisted that, if it had to be distinguished from +R, it would have to be pronounced "dash R."
It makes little difference today, and people no longer even consider the "minus" as a pejorative adjective.

Thank you JoeRyan, I guess this setteles the "dash"/"minus" debate!

EDIT:
Do you know of a way to recover a misflashed Ricoh drive? I know Lite-on for example can be flashed in DOS with a binary firmware.

I've always pronounced stuff like this as minus as i've been doing that for 30odd years (yup, i'm British); before this thread and the one linked to by cyprusrom, i'd not once thought to ponder why Americans use and pronounce it 'dash R'

creaky- Perhaps I'm British as well ? I always called it Minus myself ! Actually Though Being one of the Americans you spoke about ! I never actually gave it a lot of thought! Though I did see people post that it was supposed to be pronounced as Dash instead of minus ! But then what do I know I remember that DVD originally Stood for Digital Video Disc and not the Digital Versatile Disc moniker they've stuck on it Now !Better marketing I suppose ? anyways I still say Minus and Plus regardless of whether or not it's the {COOL /in/ Or )Correct thing to do ! I suppose you go with what you know & or are use to saying/writing - Whatever works That's what I say ! Good Luck, Happy Burning & Smooth sailing !!!!!!!!!Cheers !

Dash/minus, plus/cross
I am in the States myself, and I am "minus" dude. Not native born, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I wonder if Andy Parsons & co. will try to sabotage my rig!! Coz I am not picking up the "dash", no matter how much the Office Max experts try to correct me(while trying to sell me some "great quality" X16 Imations)

Everyone has their take on the pronunciation, Americans prefer dash, British English uses minus, hell some people say "DVD Hyphen R"... Just learn to live with the diversity.

Minus is such a negative word, LOL!!
Quote: where do you guys get your discs?like in stores like fry's, office depot/max/supplies, best buys, ect. whenever theres a sale?
It depends what media I get. I get lots of media. Regular, inkjet printable,DL,and occasionally Lightscribe.
Regular media,Most weekly sales through Brick & Mortar stores like Office Depot,Bestbuy,Staple's,and Office Max. Occasionally check walgreens,oddlots/biglots, and other odd stores. Both plus and dash formats, same price locally.
Quote: would buying it online be cheaper? if it is, where?
It is for the regular dash format media. Not so for the plus format, especially inkjet printable media. Some of the finest inkjet printable media is only in the dash format, and can't be easily located nearby.
If you use the dash format, the best deals are on the net.Plus format like myself, not as fortunant.
Also: The Taiyo Yuden and Hitachi media is getting very scarce locally. Ty's are easier to get on the net,but you gotta watch out from who you buy them from.
Don't go by the brand names. Maxell used to have some great manufacturers-Taiyo yuden on the -4x,hitachi on the +/-8x,but they slacked up on the 16x speed media. 8x or below,if you can find them, you'll be ok.
Memorex was the opposite. The +16x are coding as Ricohs and looking very good. Below the 16x speed,be cautious of them.
TDK: I wouldn't bother with any of their media.Of all the burn logs I go through-people having burning issues,TDK codes pop up most of the time.Same with Philips,JVC,Kodak, and most store brand named media. Office Depot's brand is the exception. They've got some pretty decent manufactures like ricoh and ritek.
BTW: What happened to fuji? I haven't heard anything about them in ages. Kmart used to run some great weekly ads on them.
HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

Taiyo Yudens , Verbatims , Sony's Officedepot( Ritek & RicohJPns ) and Maxell MIJ's & The older 8x maxells that were Ritek I guess Other than that it's hit and miss On who'll you get Media code wise ? Interesting that Memorex should get a Decent Supplier to Oem Their 16x Ricoh) But use crap for everything else? I would guess that Buying The Ricoh's as OFFICEDEPOTS media is still Probably cheaper though Right ?
