I followed the steps to make a backup disc and it sucks. I used dvd decrypter to read and write the iso. file to the sony dvd-R. I had it wirte at a speed of 4x and I used the swap magic 3.6 to boot it.
the game play fine but the disc takes a long time to load and the music skips bad and the videos stop and skip. Is there a way to fix this and make a perfect backup?

it depends on what system you have; fat or slim. fats can only use dvd-r, and slim is recommended to dvd+r.
also, the right media has to be used. sony is one of the best. if they're still giving problems, try verbatims; highly recommended. also, try burning slower than 4x.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

I have been reading posts on burn speed, and people are saying that burning at 1X will cause more problems then burning at a high speed. I burn all my games at half of what the disc top speed is.

I've been having similar issues, Firstly I am quite new to backing up games but i have tried to do as much research as possible.
I have acess to 2 ps2 system both chipped internally but I am unsure which ones but one is a slimline and the other is the phat one both play original games no problem.(the fat one is a mates)
I have a dvd writer capable of writing dvd-r, dvd+r upto 16x and dl dvd upto 8x, I also have another dvd writer capable of copying just dvd-,+R's upto 16x.
I use imgburn, dvddycrypter, nero v6 and alcohol 120% at various speeds ranging from 1x-8x but mainly between 1-4x as iv'e read the slower the better. I have used maxell 8x dvd-r, infiniti 8x dvd+r,
mrdvd(cheap) 8x dvd+r, bulkpaq 8x dvd-r, aone 8x dvd+r dl and nodefex 8x dvd+r dl. (None work on the slim line and the aone dl's are very staggered on the fat one.)
My problem is no matter which combination of settings i use nothing will work on my slimline ps2 except a copy that i borrowed to test my mod chip which was written by someone else, but all the discs i have wrote work fine on the fat ps2?
Infact the first copy i did on an infiniti dvd-r burned with alcohol at 2.4x worked fine for a day or 2 but then my slim ps2 decided it wasnt going to read it anymore but the fat one still has np?
has anyone else encountered this problem any ideas what the problem could be because almost everything i have written works fine on the fat ps2 and i am so frustrated as im burning money like dvds.
I patched the dual layer game with toxic patcher prioro to this it wouldnt load full stop, Great program.
Any help appreciated. Tgood, yoyo.

tgoodyo, how are you copying the DL games? Some people use CD/DVDgen to make sure the the image is rebuilt into a PS2 image. I used the PS2 to rip the image to a HD and transfer it to my PC, but that's 'cuz I don't have a DL reader in my PC.
Try: rip game, CD/DVDgen to create an IML file, use IML to ISO to make the image, then burn. Maybe I'm being too confusing. Anyways, all those programs are available at SKSAPPS.COM.
cee43ja1, I have used DVD +R for a while for my backups on my fat PS2, but I play most of my stuff on the HD. The backups work, tho'. I played Indigo Prophecy on a +R for the longest time, 'cuz the damn game won't work on the hard drive.
For the rest of you, don't buy cheap-ass discs. Get decent media, burn SLOW! Even if you have a copy that works, if it was a fast burn, or poor media, you will probably burn out the PS2 laser. I HIGHLY recommend you to learn how to use a hard drive with the PS2, as it saves the laser life.
Cheers!

tgoodyo, there are other places in this site to ask that, but I'm a generous, erm, newbie.
Here is a link to using USB HDDs.
In fact I use that site for all PS2 or console related information.
Cheers!
