Is it normal that HD channels are smaller in size than standard channels? Almost all local HD channels have a black box surrounding it, making the size a lot smaller than usual. Other HD channels tend to just have the black bar on top and bottom. Is that how it is for HD channels?

btw..my provider is Time Warner.

Check your tv and cable box settings if connected to one. I.e. cable box set to 16:9.

Yea, sounds like the aspect ratio is offset. Try changing the settings on your tv. Also, some tv's have an "auto aspect ratio" setting. Try turning that on and you might avoid any future problems.

apparently the resolution was set at 480i that caused this problem. Many channels are now full screen at 1080i but other channels still have the black bar on its side instead of top and bottom.
I think it varies on the channels programming though, could be wrong.

Some HD broadcasts will have black bars on both sides. They are part of the broadcasts, shot with regular cameras...in other words "fake HD"
