Ok. so I bought a 512 card for my oldschool dell desktop, and theres only 1 notch in the card. but. there's 2 notches on the motherboard where it goes. I'm guessing this is because its old. so I decided to file off the extra plastic that makes the second notch on the mother board; its just plastic, it cant harm anything to try. Let me know your thoughts on this project, and I'll let you know how it goes (if i dont get back to you on it, the computer blew up and killed me. lol)

you got the wrong ram then. you're not suppose to modify anything to make the ram fit.

no. the system will just ignore the 512 stick.
go to crucial.com, and run the system scanner to find the right ram specs you need.

the motherboard uses sdram pc66, pc100 or pc133. what is the make & model# of the dell? you will fry both the ram & motherboard if you had used that ram. that is the reason for those notches besides not putting in the wrong way.

Run the scanner as suggested, it will tell you what kind of RAM your mobo supports. Take that information to the store with you and buy the correct sticks.

sounds like my 7 year old compaq presario, which is still up and running win2k. started with a single 128 pc100, and then switched to 2x 256 pc133.

lol like the other's said don't file it off! Reminds of the time some years back when a kid cut off the PCI-E pins off his new 7950GT to fit his AGP slot. This was back when the card was worth 300 dollars!

Reading through this thread confirms my thoughts that some people shouldn't be allowed to touch anything, inside of a computer.

lol this reminds me of one time quite a few years back now. i bought this brand new computer with isa slots and of course me not knowing a thing about computers i noticed my sega master system games had the same size chip in em so i took the games casing of and stuck it into the isa slot of my pc turbed it on and....... boooooom. lol there went my new pc and its warranty. lol i quickly lernt my lesson not to ever stick something in a pc that isnt made for it. lol my mate still gives me sh*t about it today. so havin said that NEVER EVER try to stick something into a computer that dosnt fit or isnt made for it and also NEVER EVER EVER try to cut/file/modify a part for it to fit.

lol dude, thats definitely DDR or DDR2 ram that you bought, and btw, modding it or trying to fit it in will cause a frying of your ram or ruining the motherboard. go fetch some SD ram and that will fix your little problem. :D
