I have been trying to overclock my cpu Q6600 to the highest possible overclock but, It doesnt seem to work. I have a ASUS Maximus Formula Speical Edition Motherboard with a core 2 quad Q6600. Everytime I try to overclock my cpu in the bios with the settings as "crazy", the overclock seems to always fail. So, is there a way around this without doing it manually? I have only been able to overclock my cpu to 3.0 ghz. Thanks!

Hey victor, what do you mean when you say the overclock seems to fail? The "crazy" setting puts the cpu at 3.5Ghz, so you would have to set the FSB to 389 to achieve that setting.

Do you have a aftermarket cooler?

No i dont have an aftermarket cooler. everytime I try to use the crazy settings. The system hangs and the bios tells me that the overclock failed.

well thats probably why. You need to get a better cooler if you want to overclock. A full 1GHz clock is huge to do - especially on a stock cooler.

If I were you I would do a bit more research if you dont want to fry your quad, because getting that much of a boost under a stock cooler is extremely dangerous.

With the stock cooler, I image you could get to 2.8Ghz max.

Also, automatic overclocking - never a good idea. Read through our overclocking guide and do it properly yourself. You'll get much better results.
