I am looking to buy a WIRED 4 port router for p2p use. I would like it to be under $100.00, Easy to configure, good documentation, reliable and of course have good security features.I use Utorrent, broadband cable, XPSP2 Pro. Please give a model number. I am using a Netgear now but it is over 5 years old and has no security features. Thanks in advance.

You could get a Linksys WRT54GL and put DD-WRT firmware on it - that gets you a top-end router for low-end money!

The WRT54GL is a wired router. Just because it has wireless capability doesn't mean it's also not a cabled router - it is, it has a WAN port and a 4-port 100Mbps switch built into it.

Do you have any knowlage of routers I had to learn the hard way.
Its not the router you need to worry about it is how easy it is to set up.
Igot a Netgear wired router and you just have to learn from the forums how to set it up. upnp ports firewall OS firewall PC ports etc

I've a reasonable experience in networking, it's not my strong point but I've done a lot of research this year. If you're not too familiar with it, the WRT54GL may not be such a great choice as its beauty lies in its customisation, not in its ease of enabling high end features.

I am not familiar with routers. I guess the most important thing to me is ease of configuration with reasonable security features. Thanks.

For my use which security features should I look for? I know I need at least a firewall. Thanks.

Pretty much all routers will come with a firewall of some sort. If you're never using wireless you can disable it, so you don't have to worry about wireless security. The good thing about most router firewalls is that by default they block pretty much everything except 'safe' ports like HTTP and FTP. You have to manually forward anything you want open.

This is all good but do you know how to set it up.
I take it you want to download?
If so then you need to learn about how to set up a router and then the router you choose will be one that you can set up.
my Netgear is a pain but you just have to learn about IP addresses and ports and take the firewall off.
I posted a guide for us newbies on the Netgear forum because all the good help I got was just to advanced, and it took me ages to work it all out.
I now use a home wire network for my house Devolo plug n and away you go.

The WRT54GL's a nice inexpensive, relatively powerful router - liked because you can torrent with it and it won't just get confused and stop working.
