Track name issues on MAC

First off, Im running Leopard. Okay, so I have downloaded many, many tracks from a site called mp3Sale. If the cd isnt from a specific artist but rather "various artist" the site still shows the artist in the track list. However, when I download the track I get "various artist" versus the artist name. In the past few months I have been just renaming them in iTunes. Couple of questions:

1) Does iTunes rename the tag for the track or just the file in iTunes?
2) Is there a program that will automatically rename them for me?
