I've been haveing trouble backing up movies lately. My computer wont acknowledge some discs. Even when they are brand new out of the box and cant understand why. I copied disc 1,2,4 of the wire s4 but 3 isnt recognised by my drive and other movies as well. DVD decrypter, anydvd, dvd shrink, and dvd rebuilder all say there is no disc or medium present. My drivers, firmware, micosoft updates, and burning software are all up to date. PLEASE HELP! I have been makeing copies for years now and never encountered this just cant figure out why some discs r noticed and others not.

i gave dvdfabhddecrypter a try looks like a nice program but still couldnt read the disc even with the pathplayer option on. Its wierd i put the same dvds that dont work for me on my neighbors computer and they play fine there using the programs i normally use. After a while i got frustrated and started inserting and ejecting the disc over and over. noticed that the computer etheir ignores the disc or says that its an imcompatible medium. have no idea whats going on here.

Try cleaning the disk. Some burners can read through the slightest smudge while others bog down in it.

I doubt it's a dirty disk if your pc/programs ignore it completely sometimes.
MysticE nailed it.
Probably time to start shopping.

I wouldn't do that, if you were to test the burns you would find that the quality is dropping on those discs that still do burn. Maybe as a CD writer only.

The on and off working conditions dictate that u need a new burner. Just in the off chance you tried to burn something important and the pc said burn was good, then u delete the file. AS u read the disc, u find that the burner gave u a coaster instead and there was no way to recover the deleted file.Fustration and now u wished u heeded MysticE's and 7thsingers sagely advice as to trash this burner and buy a new one. Just my 2 cents.

Guys it's kind a stupid to jump to conclusions without even knowing whether FireWater has even updated his firmware and what drives he's using.
FireWater:
First off let us know what kind of DVD drives your using..
Easiest way to find is to Right-click on My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager> Then click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives link and it will expand showing the manufacturer and model of all the optical drives connected to your PC
Copy the manufacturers and models here.
Secondly have you updated your firmware at all for your drives, or recently? If not this could be the culprit, your drives may not be recognizing the latest revisions of DVD-ROM's.
Lastly, as a precautionary measure I would make sure that you have DMA enabled: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038p

I have the stock emachines dvd rom that came with my desktop HL-DT-ST dvd rom GDR8162B and burner i bought later SONY DVD-RW DRU-510A. The latest firmware I have for the emachines is 0015 and for the sony its 1.1A. The firmware was upgraded just this month and checked to see if there was anything newer out, but there wasn't any that I could find. As for the dma settings i followed the guide but when I double click on the primary or secondary IDE chanel controllers I get a general, driver, details, and resources tab but not one for the advanced settings. The quality of the copies hasn't gone down or slowed down it just decides to not read certain movies. Lately I tried backing up my LOST season 2 set but couldn't so I borrowed another person's set and drive still wouldn't read it, but right after that i backed up 3:10 TO YUMA and tried LOST again with no success.
