Don't know if that is possible as dvd (mpeg 2 ) is only 480p, especially on a dvd-5

rotary,
the files are .mkv and around 2.18 GB each. the are in 720p if it matters.
as far as a stand alone player, it is a Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder.
Thanks,

gfxbss, Is your goal to play it on a stand alone or just to free up HDD space? I didn't get a clear message from your post.
If it is to play it on a stand alone and keep it in HD, then that is impossible. Standard Definition DVD players are designed to give a maximum output of 576p (PAL)/ 480p (NTSC). Unless you want to upgrade to a blu-ray/HD-DVD stand alone.
If you want to convert the files to play on a stand alone and don't mind losing some resolution (1280 x 720 ---> 720 x 576 PAL or 720 x 480 NTSC), then there are many applications available that can enable you to do this. You will need to create a DVD compliant mpeg2 file and then author it to a DVD.
If you simply want to free up HDD space, then just burn it to a DVD as a data disc.
