FYI it is possible to replace a broken DVD drive in the Accurian (Radio Shack) ADR-3223 with a different brand drive. Below is a link to another afterdawn forum about replacing the DVD drive. The information was helpful. It refers to another website about replacing it on a Lite-On HDD since the Accurian is a private-labeled Lite-on (I can not add a post to that forum since it is more than 6 months old).

The drive no longer spun at all. Since I had both an NEC ND-2500A DVD Drive and Lite-On LH-20A1H186C Dual Layer Drive in my computer, I tried each of them. Both seemed to work only partially - they read a DVD as a CD so I didn't purse them further (?til later). I then decided to open the not-working DVD drive to see if there was a broken belt (there wasn't), and after talking to Lite-on Tech Support I hooked up the drive the computer to try again choosing the region (sounds like that is a common failure mode). That didn't do it.

Since so many people have had success with replacing the drive with similar Lite-On drives (the Accurian is a Lite-on DDW-813S), I again tried the Lite-On LH-20A1H186C Dual Layer Drive. This time it worked (I haven't figured out why it didn't before). It reads and writes correctly. Only limitation so far is that you can not fast forward except by chapters. Since I heard that fast forward often does not work when replacing with newer drives, I again tried my (older) NEC ND-2500A drive, and it worked as well, including the fast forward. Both fit inside the recorder with a little modification (the NEC is a tighter fit than the Lite-On). If you are very careful and have a little luck, you can even get the Accurian spring-loaded drawer plate to fit on the NEC (I had partial success with it).

I speculate the you lose fast-forward if you replace with a drive that has dual layer or lightscribe or both. Note that you can not take advantage of the dual layer if you do replace it with a dual layer drive.

Before my drive failed it was making a loud noise (my son says). I had previously noticed that whenever the power to the Accurian was on, any disc in the drive would spin, whether or not you were doing anything with it. From now on I plan to make sure to not leave a DVD in the drive when I'm using the hard disc.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.
