Can anyone tell me how to take a clip from a DVD and convert it to a format (avi . mpeg.) that I can put in a powerpoint presentation?

Would mpeg4 work? You can use Nero Recode to cut out clips and encode them to mpeg-4 .

I have no ideea how PP videos work(never did a PP in my life:~)!). I am assuming it needs to access an external decoder, so it will as long you have something like FFDshow installed? Don't know...
DVD Shrink ) you can use something like Internet Video Converter to convert to the format of your choice:
