Hard Drive Detection Problem

Before a recent little problem, I had two hard drives connected to sata ports and they worked fine. After I tried to connect another hard drive that was damaged, the only way I can get 2 working HDD to work is to hook them up through the IDE port. I can get my primary hard drive to work when connected by sata, but as soon as I connect the slave HDD ( either by IDE or sata), the bios can no longer detect the HDDs. Does anyone know what this problem might be?
