The sticky topics didn't really help me that much since it recommends stuff for modern burners.

Anyway, I have a HP dvd writer dvd200i (a second-gen DVD burner) that only burns DVD+Rs and +RWs (besides CDs) at a max speed of 2.4. That I cannot replace right now.

Now, my question is if I decide to start burning DVDs would it cause my PS2 laser to burn out faster using a DVD+R at 2.4? (I have a new silver slim from Christmas 2006 with swap magic 3.6)

Probably not, just a lower success rate of back-ups that will work.
