When encoding my d2v file with Tmpgenc in "fast action" areas I am getting white blocks all over the screen. Like they put in film over faces when they are hiding someones identity. I have checked the vobs on the hard drive with WinDVD and Media Player and they play fine at the parts where the blocks occur

Can someone explain to me how to set up Tmpgenc to eliminate these blocks please as they are not there when playing the vobs so there must be a way to get rid of them

Sounds Like Macro Blocks which are usually caused From a too Low bitrate...You can get this Quite a Bit From VCD"s because VCD"s use a Very Low bitrate...Well if you are makeing VCD"s then you really Can Not Raise the bitrate if you want to make a Standard Compliant VCD ,But if under "Motion Search Precition" you set it to "High Quality" it will Help with the Macro Blocks and if you check the "Soften Block Noise" setting this will also help..But you gotta realize with VCD you will Get Macro Blocks at certain Scenes Because VCD is a Low Quality Format and the Only way to totally get rid of all of them is to either Make a XVCD or try SVCD...good Luck

Thanks for the response. Tried the settings you suggested. It minimised the blocking but it was still there. Tried it as an SVCD too and still the same result

Well if it is still there after encodeing to SVCD then the Problem is that your Source AVI Files are of Too low of Quality and/or resolution and there is nothing you can do about that....

Hi

My source files are AVIs created from vobs direct from my original DVD with DVD2AVI. Thats the weird thing as the picture is crystal clear and when I play the VOBS from the hard drive they are crystal clear as well. If there is anything going wrong it must be when I use DVD2AVI to create the d2v file for Tmpgenc. Its not downloaded stuff I am trying to make into a VCD

I have backed up all of my DVDs to VCD using Tmpgenc and never come across this problem before

So they aren"t AVI files you are encodeing, you are Frameserveing to Tmpgenc useing D2V files?? Well that is the Same Method I used when Makeing (S)VCD"s and it the Same method I now use for Backing up DVD"s...I think I might know what the Problem is..Are you Playing these Files on your PC in Full screen when you are seeing the Blocks???
If so then that is the Problem as the Resolution of Your PC Monitor is Much Much Higher than your Files and even your TV set so when Playing at Full screen the Files get resized to your Monitor resolution which Ruins the Quality But they Should Look fine when Played in there native resolution and on your TV set...cheers

Thanks for the reply. The blocks show up in the window when I am using the source range to split the files over 2 discs and that is quite a small window When I play the vobs in WinDVD full screen they are fine

There cant be anything wrong with the files as they are direct from original DVD. I presume all DVD vobs are the same so cant figure out what is wrong with this particular film

Got me really baffled as I have never come across this before

If they are Only in the Window when setting the source range then there shouldn"t be a problem...It just Might be a Problem with the Decoder when used in the Source Range, If the Final Video is file then don"t worry about it....
