Restore PC to original condition with the Recovery Manager if Windows Vista cannot be accessed
If the PC cannot access Windows, use Recovery Manager to restore the hard drive by following the steps below.
1. Press F11 on the keyboard immediately while the computer is starting up. The HP Backup and Recovery Manager window will appear.
2. If the Recovery Manager can access the hard drive it displays a prompt to backup up your user files before continuing the recovery. If it cannot access the hard drive to fix the system errors, the Recovery Manager starts recovering the hard drive to its original condition.

Any time i have installed xp onto an hp machine with vista I have never been able to access the recovery partition anymore. Im not sure what it is that messes it up but i could not get it to work afterwards.

Did you create the recovery discs before you tryed to install winxp?
Because if you created the recovery discs then you could boot off of those and they will fix everything.

If you have those discs, then on an HP you usually pres the "ESC" key at the HP boot screen which will bring you to a boot menu and then u select to boot from your cd/dvdrw drive and then it will take you through the process on the discs.

use a partition tool (i use the hiron boot disc) and make the recovery partition active
that ought to make it boot from it and start the recovery

i was stupid and didnt make the backup disc first, but i found out that hp can mail u a copy so i ordered them cost about $15 so not that bad. only thing i dont get is why vista works fine, it fails to run xp and it fails to run the recovery. i have Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 but that doesnt reconize the recovery partition and xp wont boot
