I was just wondering what the best LightScribe media is? I just bought an LG DVD-RW drive and it has this function. Also I have been burning using DVD-R media. I noticed there is also DVD+R. What is the diff? Is one better than the other? Thanks.

The best lightscribe media out there is Verbatim. That is the media I use and I love it. I have had no problems with it because it is a high quality media. I bought a 50 pk of verbs and the all burned without any problems.

As for -R or +R, it comes down to a couple factors.

Personal preference is a major in choosing which to go with. I personally perffer +R. Others perffer -R. Whatever works for you.

Another factor is which format your burner and Player can handle. My friend has a player that only plays -R, and my bro has a burner that only takes +R. So, it is all what your drives like and what you perffer.

There are some articles out there at have some reaserch that explains why - or + is "better". I couldn't the articles to post links too. So Sorry about that.

All in All, I use +R verbatim lightscribe media and have never been disapointed. If thats the media and format you chosse I think it will work out great for you.

HP and Memorex will code out as CMC-MAG disks, I was given them as presents and have played with them, will report back on how well they play in 6 months. Trust me, go with the Verbs.

Lightscribe:

VERBATIM!!!!!!!!!!

I ignore the rest.

Main difference between Plus and Dash?

Stand alone compatability!!!! Those are 2 different formats. Original dvds are Dvd-Rom Format.

Plus format can be booktyped to dvd-rom, Dash can't.

Most LG drive have bitsetting capability. This is also called booktyping. You may have to set it with your burn program/s or you may need a separate utility. This bitsetting alters the plus format, and sets it as Dvd-rom. Not actual dvd-rom format, but makes it so other drives think it's an original Dvd-rom format movie. It fools the picky players into reading backups. When it comes to reading backups, stand alone players can do some screwy things, and compatability is the usual culprit.

If you have a drive that shows any of the following messages,it's usually compatability:
No Disc
Dirty Disc
Wrong format
Wrong region
Illegal disc

JMT74: If you have no playback issues with the dash format, then stick with it. If you encounter any drives that showed any of those errors, then booktyping the plus format usually helps solve that issue.

Thanks for the info. Any info on the Lightscribe 1.2 would be helpful to. Is there much diff between regular Lightscribe and the 1.2 version?

I saw something about that over at cdfreaks.com.

It's been a year and a half since I purchased any Verbatim LS media. When it comes to labling my discs, I use full hub inkjet printable and shiny inkjet printable.

LS only gave me mediocre results, takes 35 mins extra,a buck apiece, and a lot more wear and tear on a drive. The newer Taiyo Yuden Watershields that I use, look better than the original covers and only 65 cents each.

To answer your questions:

1. Verbatim LS media is the best, period.

2. The difference between DVD+R and DVD-R is that DVD-R was the first type of blank DVD media on the market. As such it uses older, less reliable technologies that newer drives may have trouble recognizing or aren't compatible with.

Generally speaking DVD+R's are far more compatible across all platforms and are more reliable when it comes to burning/playback.

3. To use LS 1.2 profile discs you need to update your LS System Drivers and install the LS Control Panel (go here:http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsecti...dex.aspx?id=810)

These newer system drivers allow you to set the contrast settings on your labels (make them darker so they don't fade so quickly), support more label templates and higher burn speeds and generally make your LS discs more reliable.

If you haven't already done so update to 1.2

Everyone says Verb is best, must be a good reason! I've been using verb LS and hp LS discs, so far i can't tell any difference in play back quality between them. I'm sure time will tell as i've only been doing LS discs for a month or two. I'm still waiting for the NEW color LS discs i've heard about to show up here!!

CMC-MAG corp has a reputation for the disk deteriorating over time, to the point it is no longer playable or rippable. Maybe they have changed, but I'm not going to risk it just yet.
