Sounds like a backup copy that is not burned (well ) so that a stand alone can play it, as if +R not booktyped to dvd-rom or possibly burned with Nero 8/dvd shrink/dvd decrypter while on Vista. Need imgburn.
It's a movie from the net. It's a full dvd with vob files. My player is the Philip's 5982. I always use a DVD+rw disc to try it before burning the final copy. I'm using DVD Shrink 3.2 to burn it. I also tried dvdSanta with the same results. I thinking it's a codec problem but the player gives no error at all.

Don't know if this is your problem or not but if i burn a dvd+rw and book type it , it has a picture but no sound on my player. if i don't book type the rw it will play picture and sound. Just a Thought.
Agree with iluvendo, use ImgBurn, a very handy tool. It allows booktyping which can only be done with the plus R media. Booktyping does help with standalone comatability. Or, try minus R format, which seems to work in most players too.
The more expensive standalone players are more picky. Go figure.
It turns out I had a DTS audio stream because the movie was in surround sound. The whole thing had to be re-authored to remove the DTS sound stream, then converted to AC3 and put back.
I'm hoping this helps others if they come across this problem.
