Hello. I am really interested into ripping my old DVD's on to my computer. I went out and bought a laptop with a DVD multi recorder. I am not a computer wiz at all. I was expecting to just put a DVD into the drive and then start ripping. Of course that was not the case. I am stuck. Can anyone help me. I don't know what programs I need. My computer is windows based. I went to Office Depot today looking at software. I was confused because it seems that none of the software no matter how much it cost, was right for me. I then went over to Best Buy and no one seemed to really know what they were talking about. Please help!!!

You don't need to spend a cent on any software, there are free ones that do everything that you need:
DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip the movie to hard disk
DVD Shrink to author/shrink the movie if needed to fit on a regular DVD
and ImgBurn to burn it to DVD. With newer movies you might need Fixvts to completely vlean the ripped files. Follow this guide and you'll be good to go:

:~) I guess we do!
I am just thinking...how many people don't know about this stuff and are wasting money on programs that are not good! The only 2 software that would be worth investing money into would be DVDFab Platinum or AnyDVD. The other ones, do nothing alone against the current encryptions.
But it's okay dmarsh26, now that you came acrosss AfterDawn, you are out of the dark!!

Thanks for all the help. I fell asleep last during my trail run. I finished today though. It worked on my cheap DVD player. But on my Phillips Divx ultra, it will not play. I am very excited. Thanks for all the help. You guys are great. Please let me know if anyone knows how to fix it so I can play my new movies on the Phillips Divx.

What discs do you use(brand and format, DVD+R or DVD-R)?
What burner do you have?
Usually the cheap dvd players play about anything that you throw at them , short of a toasted bagle! The fancier ones are a little more picky, some don't like the +R format some don't like the -R format.
To achieve best compatibility should use DVD+R and booktype to DVD-ROM
