When trying to back up scratched DVDs, and I've tried to backup quite a few of them, I've noticed that problems with the backup are more common towards the end of the movie. By problems, I mean the movie locks up.

Why is a bad backup most likely to lockup near the end of the movie?

If trying to polish the scratches out of a DVD, what part of the physical DVD correspond to the end of the movie?

This problem can occur when using bad media or burning too close to the edge of the disc. There are other factors that can cause this but these are the most common.

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

DVD Shrink and DVDRB both provide a mechanism I use to prevent burning oversize. The problems I'm referring to are not from burning too big. My media is all top quality most highly recommended so thats not an issue.

What type of media are you using?
Can you post a burn log?

The way that discs are handled in general , they tend to get scratched more towards the outer edge of the disc. That's probably why the movie freezes near the end. Look at the scratched DVDs and see if you notice a pattern, the damaged areas being near the outer edge of the disc.

Hi,
For DL, I use Verbatim +R.
For DVD5, I use TY -R.
For RW, I use Memorex +R.

What I've brought up is more of a general observation than a specific instance. However, the next time I have problems, I could post a burn log.

I'm having a problem with the movie Crash right now. I compounded the disk with Turtle Wax polishing compound and waxed it with Preen Floor Wax and got it to get past the sticking point near the end but I wound up with temporary sticking points earlier on.

I wonder if the compound added some problems. I haven't tried it before. I usually use Turtle Wax white compound which is rougher and I know that usually works well. The Preen Floor Wax is tried and true on my end for improving rips.

I was using a used and slightly scratched DVD RW. I'm going to try again with a brand new RW and see if that helps.
