XP 64bit help

I just built a new computer and wanted to do something different then xp but was advised not to go with vista and the 64bit was sugested. The first time that I installed it it wouldn't do windows downloads and was adding hardware more then once. So I figured bad install...... Tried to repair it and seem to do better but when I played games it would freeze or shut off. Found out my graphics card was overheating because the fan went out. Fixed all that and reinstalled xp x64. The computer was doing everything right like the windows downloads and some installs but it would freeze up and if it froze on an install it wouldn't install the software/driver ever again. The computer would say it was there but It would not work and if you tried to uninstall them it would say corrupted install and to reinstalle. It was suggested that maybe I had a bad burn of xp even thought it was a microsoft disk and to get a different copy and try again. So I did and the same thing. Someone said to check the power by going with the bare minimum of every thing and slowly adding things to see if the power supply was failing but it did not work either. I can get it start up in safe mode and run for days but not in normal mode for more then a sec after the desktop comes up. The longest I got it to run was for about 2 hours and that was it. If it goes longer then a sec when it freezes it takes 15 to 20 restarts to get back to that point. Any ideas, suggestions, C4 (HEHE)
