Hi, just got a PS2 and i'm reading about ways to play backed up games. I don't know anything about PS2s other than what i've read in the past 2 hours on this forum and other related links.
I'm looking for the best/cheapest way to be able to play backed up games.
If i understand correctly my options are:
1. mod chip ¬ expensive, complicated to organise, irriversible, voids guarantee
2. swap magic ¬ have to change cds by opening the drive without restarting the console or something... has physical tools to manipulate your ps2
3. memory card / usb boot ¬ seems fairly new and seems you have to recode backups to play? won't play all.
I'm torn between swap magic and this memento memory card thing. Can someone suggest reasons for one over the other?
Situation:
-Not a problem getting images of software i already own, downloads faster than it takes to rip the original DVD. on a 24mbit line takes half an hour.
-not a problem burning dvds
-fairly computer savvy although completely new to this elf malarque
-got spare usb keys and large usb drives if that makes a difference
It is really hard to install a modchip if you don't have a lot of experience. I destroyed one ps2 a year ago trying to install a mod chip. I recomend swap magic. Use only dvd-r and try to burn no more than 4x speed. i recomend sony or verbatim dvds and only 2x speed. After you got swap magic and you get it work, check this link http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p28ncn6kYKoMx_0A7VXraHQ
think swap magic is the way to go. I've been doing some more research and the memor32 stuff seems good if you want to use your ps2 to do everything, but swap magic seems more straight forward. got the slim ps2 so don't have to unscrew and pull at mechanisms.
does the dvd media effect the game by either playing or not playing, or does it freeze half way though games and is generally unreliable?
Saying this cause i've got a bunch of cheap dvds that i use as throw away media. if i have to use 5 dvds to get one that plays, no prob, but don't know what the long term effects would be.
Don't use cheap media. It usually doesn't work, and if it works, after a couple of months it stop working. I don't think you need to spend 5 dvds to get one working. If you download a game, maybe it doesn't work and you waste a dvd, but everything has risk. My ps2 is slim too. It is esay to instal the pieces to make it work whitout the cover closed. The link I put before is a list of games that have been successfully copied. Maybe other games work, but those work for sure. use DVD decrypter, is free and works great, do not buy any program. Excuse my English.
