I have a Gateway 5478 PC and get message asking for a multimedia video controller driver. The PC was returned to Gateway repair once but I'm not sure what if anything they did.
Due to a variety of ongoing problems, I removed the "D" part. and installed a new(legal)copy of Vista Home Pro.
Gateway tech support has been no help. I know I can buy a restore cd from Gateway but that means reinstalling all my software; not an easy task.
Gateway also sent me to the Intel web site but with no instructions as to what I should do once there.
Is there a site that I can download the driver or other than unloading my Glock 9mm on it, are there other suggestions?

Hmm, Gateway don't offer any drivers for that PC, that's pretty bad. Run dxdiag (start->Run and type dxdiag)
and see what it tells you for graphics and sound.

I ran the file you suggested and Vista scanned everything. There were no indicated problems anywhere. When viewing device manager, the multimedia video controller is highlighted yellow. When opened, it says no driver installed or incorrect installation.
Gateway acknowledges I need the driver (after three calls and several hours of useless descussion)but says they don't have it. The last Gateway tech referred me to Intel and cut me off.

Hmm, that's a tough one, because i'll be honest with you, I've no idea where to look. Is there anything in your PC that doesn't work? If there's nothing you can't do that you should be able to, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If there's something that doesn't work, give us an idea and we may be able to find out what you're missing.

If anything is not working properly, I don't know what it is... The device manager keeps telling me the multimedia vider controller driver is missing or installed incorrectly.. Everytime I boot, I get the message that the multimedia video controller driver is missing and Vista offers to find it - but never does.
I can say for a fact that I will NEVER buy another Gateway PC. This issue is a minor issue compaired to previous problems, most of which Gateway tech support was no help.
I even returned the PC to Gateway once. I had the same problems when it was returned as I did before shipping it to them.
Another message that appears when booting is that the video Bios is for Engineering Only and not for production use...??? I have asked Gateway about this many times and have yet to get an answer.
I bought this unit in the middle of summer, 2007 from Fry's. Fry's has been no help either. They suggested I send it to Gateway which I did.

That is a bit suck. The price you pay for buying prebuilt PCs I suppose, there aren't many around that are much good.

Sad that Gateway support doesn't even know how to use thier own website. <sigh> Go here (bookmark this page also) http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1009570/1009570nv.shtml Under "Components" find the listing for "Motherboard" and click it. On the next page you will see "Driver Downloads", click that also. This page contains all the drivers (latest on top, earlier below) for that specific motherboard. I do notice that some of these series were configured with an nVidia add-in video card and some use Intel's on-board video controller - apparently yours has the Intel on-board video, so if you scroll down to "Video Downloads" you will notice a brand new Intel video driver dated 1/29/2008. (http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=21706&dscr=Intel(r)%20Video%20Driver%20version:%2015.7.0.1364&uid=186437006) (9539330.exe) That should work. I find Gateways website daunting, but once you understand where they tuck things away it is less daunting. I would actually suggest using the gateway tool that finds the appropriate drivers for you, but it is not always 100% accurate. (sad also) Click below to try it if you wish: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp. I suggest using the Serial number lookup on that page to help ensure the site finds the correct series and components of your specific system. I included the 1st link in my post however as it has more than just drivers, but also FAQs, Support Docs...product views (for assistance in replacing hardware) and other useful things like User Guides. (Why Gatway doesn't direct to this page on new PC's ..I'll never know.) While you are at the driver page for your motherboard...I would highly suggest you also update your BIOS (fixes an issue with spontaneously rebooting that this series is plagued with) (file dated 2/4/2008) http://support.gateway.com/support/drive...8&uid=186437898 (DP0298P.exe) (instructions are also there...missing in the instructions however, is if the RUN command is missing from Vista's start menu...if it is... simply type RUN into the search box on the start menu and click the Blue icon that is found, then proceed with thier instructions.) and I do also suggest getting any "Motherboard Downloads" (There appear to be 5: D20152-001-003.exe, D20152-001-003.exe, D20155-001-001.exe, D20156-001-001.exe and D20153-001-001.exe) You will also notice there are new drivers for the built-in media card reader, sound, network card, and modem- won't hurt to get those also so that you know you are fully up-to date. If you get stuck and wonder exactly what component is in your sytem because there is more than one possible component... use this to help you decide http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MI...750959421.shtml (In Vista... I find it is faster to get to Device Manager by....clicking the vista 'jewel' a.k.a. start button, RIGHT click "Computer" in the list on the right and choose from the menu... "Manage", click "Continue" button in the 'User Account Control' prompt, if it appears...and then use the link above to continue as XP's Device manager is not that drastically different than Vista's in appearance - so the rest of the instructions on the page above will guide you on finding what hardware components you have in your particular system.) I hope this helps! :)

I found and downloaded the new Intel driver. I got message that the Gateway "did not meet minimum requirements to install".
I have 250 Meg video, 3 gig RAM & 500 G hard drive with over 350 G free.
The Gateway tool to verify drivers, etc. will not work on Vista which I have.
I'm at a loss....

update the BIOS first. then install D20153-001-001.exe (Intel(R) Chipset Device Software Version: 8.3.0.1013) reboot each time it asks, then install the other drivers, including video- see if that works. I think the other Intel chipsets on the board need to have working and updated drivers installed before the video driver will load. (dependencies)- that is probably what it meant by you didn't meet the minimum requirements. I suspect Vista has older intel chipset drivers in its driver database, but Intel requires versions that are newer than Vista has in order to install the video driver. I fought with an Intel board (not gateway) recently that did the exact same thing yours is doing and that chipset software solved it, but it was a struggle. Also... check in device manager for any devices with an exclamation mark... if you still have any after the chipset driver install..remove them and scan for hardware changes, or simply reboot.
