Difficulty recording in LP mode

I have had a Panasonic DMR-ES20 for about 2 years now. Lately, when I program a timer recording in the LP mode, it often records in the SP mode instead. If there isn't room on the disc at that speed, the unit just stops recording when it runs out of disc space. At first, I thought maybe I had accidentally selected "SP" instead of "LP" when programming the recording. However, when this happens, after the recording is completed. the original timer recording is still set at "LP" and it displays the (!) symbol.

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?
