Hey all. I was having trouble originally with Bitcoment but recently, about a month ago, I formatted my computer and restored the factory defaults. I reinstalled all my programs as before but now, whenever I tried to use bitcomet, my internet connection would completely shut down. I don't use a wireless router or anything. All the lights on my modem are solid so I've got a connection. It just seems to stop whenever Bitcomet is in use. A few nights ago, I tried using Limewire, thinking a different program might help but when I tried to download torrents through that, the exact same problem occurred. By now, I realize the problem likely runs a bit deeper than just the programs. Any suggestions?

As a matter of fact, I am. I recently tried downgrading to Bitcomet 0.70. For the most part, the torrents are downloading slowly but that's a lot better than not at all. However, I'm still having the aforementioned problems with connection and speed. Before, my connection and pages would work and load slow but I'm lucky if a page will even partially load after an hour when BitComet is working.

Well that's the thing. As I said, I've tried to DL the torrent files through Limewire but I had the same problem so I'm not so sure using a different program will solve my problems.

i found using utorrent to be far more better than any other torrent software out there, You may be having banddwidth allocation problems. The problem is that downloading a torrent takes up some of your web browsing internet connection therefore slowing down your web browser. What size is your internet connection? Give utorrent a try and tell me if the problem still happens.

Tried it and the problem's still the same. Slow download speed and mege slow connectivity.
How am I supposed to find out my connection speed? I use Roadrunner broadband if that's what you mean.

First you have to make sure your connection is cleared.
In uTorrent, you can go to Options>Speed Guide and use the Test if port is forwarded properly button.
You should use a port in the 49152-65534 range. Port is Blacklisted
Post back with your result.

Alright, this is what I got:
OK! Port 61311 is open and accepting connections.
You will be able to receive incoming BitTorrent connections.
Says I should be sending/ receiving no problem.

That is good.
Now you can use the speed guide to adjust utorrent's settings to their optimal for your line speed.
On the Speed Guide screen there is a link to a speed test.
You should take the test several times to get an average.
Stop all internet activity, including torrents, before taking the test.
It is your upload speed that matters for adjusting settings.
Make sure to note the upload speed in kilobits (kbs).
Once you have an average upload speed from the test, return to the speed guide screen and use the pulldown menu at Connection Type.
This is a listing of common upload speeds in kilobits (kbs).
Choose the one closest to your average upload speed and uTorrent will auto-adjust your settings to their optimal for your speed
The rest of uTorrent will show speeds in kilobytes (kBs).
8kbs = 1kBs.
I would also suggest that you implement encryption.
This is easily done by ticking the box at the bottom of the speed guide screen that says Enable Encryption.
Press Use Selected Settings to save these settings.
The above should have your uTorrent set up to its best for speed.
Post back if you have any Qs.
Edit: This should also help with your issue of the internet shutting down when torrenting.
When you use the speed guide it will set your upload at, or slightly below, 80% of your overall upload ability and that should allow you to use the internet normally.

Alright, I tried to perform the speed test several times as you said but I only ever got it to work once.
Download Speed: 14606 Kb/s
Upload Speed: 479 Kb/s
I'm not sure if that's normal but I'm going to set the Connection Type at xx/512k as well as Enable Encryption. I'll let you know the results.

Update.
Okay, this seems to have solved my connection issue. Torrents are downloading and my pages haven't even slowed down so thanks a ton for that. Another question. I've got some partially completed torrent files caught in mid download through BitComet. Is there anyway I can transfer them to uTorrent without having to start the download all over again?

Yes. See Migrating Files to uTorrent.
BitComet does append the .bc! extra extension to partially downloaded files so you will have to remove it.
If you have several, you can use the .bat file example on the Migrating page as it is set for renaming BitComet files.
You got things worked out quick.
Good to hear.

Well uTorrent is behaving loads better than BitComet but for some reason, it keeps locking up like BitComet did. I'll click something on it while it's running then it will say Not Responding. If I wait a few minutes, it'll go back to normal but it seems like a problem when trying to download torrent files. I don't have a firewall running so could something else be interfering with the program?
Hey thanks again for all the help.

What other security softwares do you have?
Particularly those with real time protection like anti-virus etc.
No problem on the help.
That is what is bittorrent is about, sharing.

All I've got is McAfee and the firewall is turned off. Other than that, I have Norton scanner and the only thing left is the standard Windows firewall.

I have not found anything on McAfee AV causing that, the McAfee firewall does cause high CPU, but you have it disabled.
The Windows firewall is not an issue.
The next time this happens, check the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc) and see what process, if any, is using a lot of CPU.

When I bring up the task manager, Mozilla Firefox seems to be have the highest CPU, jumping between 05 and 11. The Desktop Window Manager jumps between 00 and 05. Other than those, everything else is reading 00. Also, I may have spoke too soon about my connectivity. For the first few minutes as uTorrent is running it seems to work fine but after that, I get the Page Is Taking Too Long To Load screen a lot, then I can't get any pages. On the plus side though, my torrents are downloading faster than ever.

You could try lowering the upload a little bit and see if that helps.
The manual setting for this is at Options>Preferences>Connection near the bottom of the page.
Try lowering it 2 kBs at a time.
You might also try lowering Global maximum number of connections at Options>Preferences>BitTorrent.
At the 512, it would be set at 250. Try lowering it 10 at a time.
As far as the other issue of uTorrent not responding I have not been able to find anything.

Okay. I tried uTorrent for a few weeks but the results in the end weren't much better. Then something went wrong with my CD burner so I decided to just wipe my drive and start from scratch. I reset my comp to factory defaults and went back to square one. I downloaded uTorrent again and reset everything. I tried it and so far, I'm getting the same problems. Torrents don't seem to download and when I use it, after a while, my web pages stop working. Anyone think this may be a problem with my ISP and if so, is there anything I can do?
