Hi I'm new and need a bit of help please.

I have a 500gb hd and i would like to format a partition, say 100gb using Fat32. Can anyone explain to me how i can do this please?

Dont use Fat32 for a HDD. NTFS is way faster.

If you already have stuff on there, then you will need to back up what you want as it will be erased in the process of formating.

You need to boot from your OS cd, and then from there you will be able to pick the options you want when installing the OS. You can choose the amount of space you want to install XP on, as well as how much space you want a certain partition to be.

So basically, you will need to reinstall your operating system, and while doing so you will be able to choose/create partitions.

True, however if he wants a 100Gb partition on a 500Gb drive, I pressume its for a reason. Maybe dual-booting into another O/S?

I would stick to the NTFS F/S personally if the partition is to be used for XP / Vista, however if you are to use it for other reasons you need to do the following. In the following steps I am pressuming you have 100Gb of "unalocated" space on your hard drive.

1) From your desktop, right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".
2) Expand the "Storage" option on the left, and select "Disk Management". From here you will see all disks connected to your PC.
3) Right click on the unallocated space and select "New Partition".
4) In the wizard, click next and then select the type of partition you wish to create.
5) allocate the size of your partition in Mb and click next.
6) Assign a drive letter to your partition and click next.
7) Click "Format this partition with the following settings" and click FAT32 in the "File System" box.
8) Type a name for the new volume in the volume label box.
9) Click next and finish.

Hope this helps. If you already have a partition created of 100Gb and wish to convert it from NTFS > FAT32, then you will need a 3rd party application like Partition Magic.

Thank alot for your help,
I needed to use FAT32 because i wanted to connect my drive to my ps3 and it will only recognise FAT32. I downloaded Partition Magic and its great. So simple.

Not a problem matey. Glad I could help.

Always good to see someone actually replying that advice works. Forums like this are where people come to find answers to problems, and most people don't say if something worked or not, they just leave it.

I for one, would like to see more people stating whether advice works, if more than anything, to let other people with the same problem know, that there is a solution.
