I need help.

Here's my problem. I haven't had any problems backing anything up for a very long time. (Haven't tried backing anything up for a few weeks before)

Just this week I tried backing up Arachnophobia & everytime I put a c blank disc into my DVD Burner it would shut my PC down & try to restart a few times. Doesn't matter what kind of disc I put in my Burner or my DVD-Rom it just restarts my whole PC.

After it tries to reset it fails a few times before it starts up normally. It took me about 4 times before I was able to back it up. First I tried using w/ Any DVD w/ Clone DVD, then I tried Any DVD w/ Nero Recode. I was finally able to back it up using the Any DVD w/ Nero Recode combo.

Today I was trying to backup another one of my movies & it keeps doing the same thing. Every time I try putting a disc in ,after it closes, my PC INSTANTLY keeps shutting down & keeps trying to restart.

What could possibly be going on ?????

I have a Plextor PX-716 writer

A LiteOn SOHD 167T DVD-Rom

Using Any DVD, Clone DVD & Nero Recode all with the latest updates & my DVD Burner & DVD-Rom both have the latest firmware updates.

If it's a power problem, then disconnecting the DVD ROM and the second hard drive to lighten the load might be an indicator.
If the burner now works, it would either be the power supply failing or the burner drawing too much power.
If the burner was drawing too much power, then I don't think it would function.
If it does work (with other components disconnected) I would suspect the power supply is borderline.

or you have a virus on the computer! do a virus scan. make sure your computer is clean and running free! do a registry clean up, use Windows Clean disk, defrag, and make sure you clean out your IE cookies and temp files! this will help keep your computer running better as it's meant to be.

My PC appears to be clean. I constantly run virus scans & the registry as well.

Also I never use IE, always FireFox.

My softwares I use for those are........

AVG AntiVirus

CCleaner & Windows washer.

@ attar

Forget to mention that after it shuts my PC the first time, it won't let me turn the PC back on. I would have to unplug the cord from the power outlet then re-plug it back in for it to power back up, most of the time.

Had my power supply replaced last year. Similar symptoms with your computer.
Took it in to a shop(didn't know what the problem was, I was just suspected it was the power supply-on/off repeatedly, unplug/plug in to power-up...). They confirmed the issue,I bought the new power supply and installed it myself(only saved a few bucks on labor, but it was a really easy thing to do, a few plugs and a couple screws...I mostly did it myself 'coz I wanted to play:~)!)

So no problems since ........?

This problem ONLY happens when I'm trying to backup a movie, never any other time.

How do I find out how many pins it is, so I know what to get ?

Well, the guys at the shop sold me the right part, I just installed it. Can't really say how to identify the righ one for a certain box. I just disconnected the old one and back tracked to install the new one.
You can indentify it by motherboard:

http://www.pcpower.com/products/power_supplies/selector/

Just take the case out and see if the power supply has a name/serial

Well cleaned out the inside of the tower also near the CPU. Was very dusty.

Hooked everything back up & still the same problem. Every time I put a disc into my Plextor Writer & while it tries reading the disc, It restarts my computer.

any disc just playing it?

boot up in SAFE mode then try a dvd in both drives see if pc crashes! then report back.

if pc doesnt crash in useing both drives then drives should be ok!

now do you have AUTORUN disabled?

have you loaded any software lately as i think theres a conflict something like 2 software trying to grab the drive at same time, like anydvd / dvd 43 / dvd fab / windows media player / nero / powerdvd... as you can see lots to choose from...

we need to find these and stop prosseses to find culprit

-------------------------------

also did you try uninstalling ide controllers in device manager if your drives are ide? not sata drives, just for good measure make sure dma is on due to crashes?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

It could be the burner try a new one you can run two with that size power supply ( burners are the crap anyway some are great some are junk I've went through 4 in one PC before I changed brands now no problems )

hmmm... get yourself new one, but pay less for it try it in your PC if it dose the same thing save the box and take it back, no loss, then you could rule that out but if it only shuts down when you use it that could be it.

I say before you start replacing any hardware do more troubleshooting specially the ones rotary suggested like booting into safe mode, and try to put a disc in your plextor there if it works in safe mode then you know it's a software issue if not then you can focus you attention elsewhere, if it's not the software then you can try disconnecting the power from your secondary hdd that does not have the O/S on it and your DVD-ROM to reduce the load on the power supply, if this fixes then you can look at the power supply as the possible culprit.

Well yesterday I uninstalled my Plextor 716A writer, then re-installed it.

I was able to put an original copy of American Gangster in and it started playing without any problem.

Then after I ejected the movie & put a blank dvd(verbatim) it starting doing the same thing again. It would just keep restarting my PC a few times & then completely shut my PC down.

Should I look into getting another DVD writer ? Maybe it's the writer that is bad ? I bought this one about 4 years ago from Newegg.com. What's a descent brand, not too expensive ? I was looking at getting a LiteOn brand since my DVD rom on my PC is a LiteOn & have been happy w/ it.

I would like to get one that will also be able to write DL as well, like my previuos one did, or does just depend on the backup software used ?
