so I know problems like this have been treated here before, and I've read everything I can find here and tried to learn from it (though I'm barely computer literate), but I still can't get anywhere. I get about 1/4 of the way into burning data files (.cbr files - scanned comics) on a dvd, and I get a burn fail with the error messages "device not available," "illegal disc" and "could not perform disc at once."
I'm using an external Samsung burner which has worked fine for several months until just recently. My first batch of discs were Memorex DVD+RW and they worked fine. The problem first started with Maxell dvd-r discs (the first 3 in the batch worked, but the rest didn't). Now I'm using Sony DVD+R discs and they're not working either. I've tried various burn speeds (down to 4x) with the same result. Here's my log:

I updated Nero from my software. It took a while, but still the same problem. The burn got a bit further (to about 37%), then got the same error and spat the disc back out. I tried to reduce some of the background programs, and I haven't been multitasking. So I'm not sure what's taking up my memory. But as far as I know that situation was the same back when Nero worked.
Here's the new log:

I'm at my wits end. Could it be a problem with the burner itself? Or is this definitely a Nero problem? I thought that Sony DVD+R discs were high quality, so I didn't think it was the media.

You really dont have enough memory to burn DVDs, it is recommended to have a minimum of 512mb, as mentioned by Rotary

On the DMA issue: I apologize for my ignorance, but doesn't "HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B" refer to my cdrom drive (drive e)? If that's the case, and I'm using an external DVD burner, how do the settings on my cd rom drive affect my burning? I've seen on other threads the recommendation to turn the DMA on, but I didn't think it applied to my situation. Can someone explain? Was it somehow turned off and that affected things?
Memory: I'm at a loss here. I take it that these numbers do not reflect the space available on my hard drive, which right now is 557mb (still very low, but that's why I need to burn these DVDs!) So if I free up more space from the hard drive will this improve the "physical memory available" or is that just a function of what's running on the computer at the time? (which, again, must be all background programs, as nothing else is running when I burn). I guess what I'm asking is what's the relation between the two sets of numbers?
Plus the fact that I had the same low memory back when I was burning dvds successfully.
I guess I'm just trying to figure out how things went wrong. As I said, I'm not very computer savvy and I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

yes your external drive doesnt use DMA only internal drives, so dont worry on DMA for that drive
although these should have DMA enabled so theres a problem there!

DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200BB-53CAA1 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
your western digital hard drive needs dma enabled and could be part the problem? as speed transfer to your external drive will be reduced when writing to dvdr.

this is for RAM not hard drive Random Access Memory (like a buffer) what programs need to use and empty on use
Physical memory : 254MB (260912kB)
Free physical memory: 75MB (76948kB)

254 is very low, windows xp can use all that leaving nothing for anything else as we almost see here...
but as you say you used to write dvdr ok, ok lets look further into this now, so you have the same setup as before but something has changed here now we know dvdr brand has changed so thats a factor and getting errors off the new brand could cause DMA to go to PIO mode (about 6 consecutive errors changes dma to pio mode)
get that DMA on with the HD
go to device manager and uninstall the the ide controllers and reboot pc then go back to same location and check your drives are in DMA (forget the dvd-rw burner, just HD + cd-rw)
are all the files for burning on your hd already so no ripping involved or convertion involved either?
all you need is to burn what you already have on hard drive to dvdr?

Yes, everything I need to burn is on my hard drive, so I don't need the other disc drives for this (one's a regular cd-rw, the other is a DVD multiplayer).
Maybe the following explains the dma situation?
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the whole problem started happening after I started copying my data dvds. Up until then I had just burned data dvds with material from the hard drive. Then I had one of these data dvds that I wanted 20 copies of (material I was gathering for my students in a class). So I made the copies. Then the very next new dvd I tried to make gave me the error, even after several tries.
I never had to manually change speed before (just let it do its thing automatically), so I don't remember how fast it used to burn, but when I reduced the speed down to 12X, it finally worked. As I said in the middle of this, I changed from Memorex to Maxell, but I really don't think that was the problem, as the first part of the Maxell batch worked. But after I finally got that first dvd with all the problems to work, every subsequent new burn did not work. I did research and Sony's DVD+R are supposed to be one of the best, so those should really be fine.
So I checked on the device manager and in the Primary IDE Channel, Device 0 says Transfer Mode - DMA if available, but Current Transfer Mode is PIO. Device 1 says 'not applicable.' Secondary IDE Channel -
Device 0 - Transfer mode: DMA if available, current transfer mode: Ultra DMA mode 2, Device 1 - Transfer mode: DMA if available, current transfer mode: PIO.
So everything says 'DMA if available' but some of them are actually in PIO mode. So what do I need to uninstall? Which is the hard drive setting and which is the cd-rw setting?

Ok, so I successfully turned the DMA back on for both the Primary and Secondary IDE channel. We'll see if this helps. I probably won't have a chance to properly test the burner for the next few days as I'm really busy with a project, but I'll let you know how it goes. If it doesn't work, you can bet I'll be back here. Thanks for helping me figure things out.

well, it wasn't the DMA setting. I tried it again and still no go. In fact it crapped out even earlier this time. It's like the burner just stops responding at a certain point.
