in device manager for network adapters it shows usbnic network adapter. there is no exclamation mark. in other devices there is an exclamation mark under ethernet controller.

i have a dell pc but im not sure of the make as its a couple of years old.

do i need a crossover ethernet?

that exclamation mark under ethernet controller means the driver is not installed. the make & model# of the dell will be marked on it like dimension 4300 so find that make & model#. what windows are you using?
