Help with FFVII on PSP

Alright, I have the disc one EBOOT for FFVII which I obtained from my own copy of the NTSC-U greatest hits FFVII disc one. The process I used was magic iso -> popstation GUI. The game boots fine, and I can start a new game, get through the opening cinematic, etcetera. But when I get to the North Entrance of the first reactor you visit (right after you choose your own name as well as Barret's, and right after Barret tells you how to run (by pressing X and d-pad), as the camera angle lowers to show you walking into the reactor with Shinra HQ in the background, the game freezes. The music still plays, but the picture and controls freeze (I can still press the home button and exit, of course). I'm running custom firmware 3.71m33-4 on a PSP slim (which has been recommended as the smoothest firmware for FFVII on the PSP). If anyone could help resolve this problem, I would be very greatful, thanks.
