Hello, all.

This is a question that I know has come up on here in many different forms before, but I really have little clue about all this stuff, and hopefully people who check out these forums enjoy troubleshooting.

Here goes:

I, too, am getting the 'illegal disc' message. Little bit different scenario, though. My computer came with SonicDigitalMediaLE. I can burn data DVDs fine with this program, but I don't think I can burn movie DVDs with it. So, I downloaded Nero. When trying to burn a movie onto DVD, I get to the same point on every project and it spits it out at the same exact point each time with the 'illegal disc' message. Now, then. This also happens when I try to burn a data DVD with Nero. But Data DVDs work great on the SonicDigitalMediaLE. This makes me think it could be Nero...(???) I've tried a couple of different versions of Nero, Nero free trials. Nothing works. Spits it out right at the same spot.

If someone could give me some advice, I'd REALLY, REALLY appreciate it. Code is below. Thanks SO MUCH for reading.

Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DW-Q58A> Version: UYS3 -

Latest firmware is UYS4 from here

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_file.php?site=firmx&file=UYS4WIN.EXE

Also update your Nero to 7.10.1.0 from here

The discs you are using are not the best quality, try Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

Watch how much you have running when burning with Nero.
It is a memory hog.

ImgBurn is good DVD burner and it is free.

Interpretation: Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format

dvdSanta gave me the following:

ERROR TRACE:
KEY, ASC, ASCQ, ASCLEN=2,30,5,a
and then
WRITE DATA FAILED.

as far as RAM goes, I did notice that in the initial log I posted, however, I'm not running anything else simultaneously with the burning software. I will have to do more research on how to minimize RAM being used.

How frustrating! This seems like it should be simple and its been a two week struggle! Thanks all for the suggestions!

let's keep this in one single thread:

Your burner, Sony DW-Q58A , it is capable to write maximum at X8 on DVD+/- media. Even with the latest firmware available, it might not support to write DVD Video on X16 media(or most of them). That's why probably you get the Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format error no matter what burning software you use.
I would try and get some X8 discs.

I think you were thinking about a different Santa, the one you mentioned it is not free. And that's used for converting different video formats to DVD. ImgBurn (which actually is free), spanks Santa any time.

thank you for your help. my next question is i use a old dvd player hook it up to my tv tunner card. and copied three 20 minute clips recorded them to a dvd-r but later found out that it had a loud backround noise like you can hear the motor from the dvd player in the backround. is there a way to cancell out or delete that noise. is there some type of software that can be used to remake the dvd and delete the loud backround motor noise. i thought i was in school looking at a movie sitting next to the old classroom rojector help
