Ok, I want to change the public ip on my computer (not the local) and it works fine with I have it plugged directly into the modem via ethernet with the ipconfig prompt in dos but no matter how many times i unplugg and plug back in my router, reset it, whatever, every single time I connect back up to it, I get the same public ip. Any idea how to get it changed? Thanks!

9/10 times your IP is provided by your ISP and cannot be changed. Most are Dynamic (change on random frequency) and others are static.

You can speak to your ISP about purhcasing a static IP but it will be one from their own "pool" of IP's. e.g 212.345.000.001 > 212.345.999.999

Why would you want to change your IP? The only other way is to "fake" your IP by appearing behind a proxy.

yea, i know about the proxy, and read somewhere that people make it seem like the public ip is hard to change, but really isn't. Anyways, my room mates thought it would be funny to mess around with my pc while I was out and I happend to have one of my most active forum sites pulled up. they ended up posting a lot of random crap that got me in trouble. My account wasn't banned, so I can still log onto it where ever, but my ip was banned from that site.

Personally I'd email the site admin explainign and hope for the best. They can check your previous posts and see it was something out of character & could reinstate you! However if you are regularly posting offensive / abusive posts then I doubt anything will change..

Be carefull as on a couple of forums I frequent, would not hesitate banning an account if I found that someone was connecting via proxy to avoid a ban.

I actually did talk to the admin and he said he understood my situation, and wouldn't ban my account, but that the ip was staying banned because that seemed fair to him.
