i am experimenting with an old computer so i decided to install server 2003 on it. i have it set up and i have added a new role for a file server. what i want to know is, how do i connect to my server to get the files?

This can get really technical, really fast. For most companies, it involves using active directory. You would create a domain by running the command "dcpromo" from the run box. After you've created the domain, you would usually join all of the computers to the domain, which would typically have a different username and password for each person. Again, this involves many steps and is probably overkill for your home.

If you want to avoid all of the steps listed above, you can simply create shares on your server. You would select a folder that you want to share and then grant proper permissions to it. Then from your desktop computer, you would simply connect to the share by typing the path to it, such as \\server\sharedfolder. You'll be prompted for a username and password. Once authenticated, you'll be able to access the files.
