I had a 100 gb drive then upgraded computer to a 160.Tried to format the 100 drive and windows won't do it. So downloaded the WD lifegaurd and it formats fine in that but when I go to open it in windows it says it's not formated. I can't see it in a dos prompt says missing files or something like that. Any ideas?

Yes im asumming you have ether Win2K or WinXP in anycase,

just copy this link into IExplorer

C:/WINDOWS/system32/compmgmt.msc

hit open on the dialog box then under the storage tab click disk management then right click your troubled drive and click format from the drop menu.

Uh yeah. its done for. you could try Scandisk to fix bad sectors or reinstall the MBR to resolve the issue.

sometimes when you partition a hardrive it screws up a secter of the drive.

an example is if you were 50% into a full partition and your computer shut off by any means.

it sounds like its getting into it and then stopping. a scratch or a smudge on the platters. what percent did it lock up while you were partitioning it.

if it locked up at 75%. you could still use 75% of it.

what is mbr?

I get:
The volume does not contain a reconized file system. Please make sure all required file system drivers are loades and that the volume is not corrupted.

When I try to switch to this drive under a command prompt. I tried the right click, properties, tools, error checking and check both boxes but when I click check now nothing happens the box just goes away.

Seriously, send the drive back to WD, if it's less than three years old they'll repair it for free, if not, time to buy another drive, the old one's knackered by the sound of it.
