Some 16x DVDs better at 1x than others?

I guess the burner in my Magnavox DVD recorder thats hooked up to my cable DVR doesn't like Verbatim 16x discs. The pie's in DVD infopro are all red in the 200 to 400 range. They play fine though, no skips or freezing problems. Verb 16x tests green (in the 20's) if burned at 8 to 16x in my computer though so it must be the DVD recorders burner which is at fault. I haven't tried TY 16x yet in the DVD recorder but plan to in a few days. Whats strange is Ritek & Sony 16x tests out all green in the 20 to 40 range after the DVD recorder burns it. Firmware issue I'm sure but I don't know how or if it can be updated with a burned CD or DVD...

See if a firmware update is available for your magnavox DVD recorder. This may help your unit handle the newer disks a little easier. Second option, look for the older 4X DVD-RW disks which seem to be everywhere here in the Carolinas. A 15 pack will last forever. (Unless you keep the programs you record forever).

Not through Magnavox it isn't!! I looked there first before I posted the original message. A few DVD recorders can be though. As to the DVD-RW's I guess I could try them then copy the disc to a DVD -R or +R when I'm finished recording the DVD-RW. For now, movies I leave alone on the disc once I record them. TV shows are loaded from the burned disc into VideoRedo where I cut out commercials then use convertx to make a DVD of 2 or 3 shows.

Samsung is the same way about firmware updates, zero. I was hoping you would have better luck with yours.

bratcher- I know they're getting scarce ( read almost non-exhistant here) But you could always try the less Obvious stores that may have older stock like - Sears , Drugstores, walgreens , Rite-aids ect... and see if you could pick up some 4X or 8 X media assuming you find some ? I would think that the 4& 8x stuff would work better at 1X then the 16x stuff even though they are all supposed to work from 1X- their rated speed ! I wish I could be more Helpful! I don't think Supermediastore .com carries anything in 4X other than mini-Dvd Riteks . Meritline.com still does? check out this link http://www.meritline.com/dvd-r-blank-media-4x.html Maybe that will help ? other than that like you said already if you can't update your firmware in any way your kinda screwed ! Well finding 4 or 8x media in the stores is almost impossible. As to Meritline they ran out of Verbatim 4x white inkjet printable but I saw they do have some full size Ritek 4x silver shiny left. I don't need it since I can get 8 & 16x meia online that the DVD recorder likes.
The 16x Verbs play ok it's just that other 16x media gives much better scan results & it's not something I worry about.

well In that Case no worries then ! I maybe a Techno -dinosaur but I judge a burn by if it looks good when I play it without deffects ! in playback of video or sound ! I realize most everyone else probably gets more into the measurements & scores so whatever works ! If you use good media and your burners are in good shape and you have the good Proggies there you go ! Glad it's working for you then !

I don't usually run DVD Infopro to test a disc unless it's some new media that either my DVD recorder or the DVD burner in my computer hasn't had before.
I'm like you, if it plays good then it's a good burn.

Try rima.com as they seem to have some 8x TY's in stock.
I actually have about 100 4x -R discs left and even a few 2x discs, all made in Japan stuff I've been saving for who knows what.

What you are experiencing with you Magnavox is known as 'pit smearing'. The media is recorded at a very low speed, and in your case most likely with incorrect parameters, so the media is over exposed to the laser. This results in irregulary shaped pits on the recordable surface.
With one or two searches I was able to find many 8x DVD-R offers, selling from USA - Taiyo Yuden seems to be very popular offer, but also RITEK / RIDATA was easily found.
Might not be a bad idea to stockpile them a bit, just in case, if you plan to use you Magnavox for years to come. Also the suggestion above about 4x -RW media is a good one.

I'm already buying Verb & TY 8x media & it tests great after the 1x burn. Oh & I bought a pack of Memorex white inkjet hub printable that codes out as CMC AM3 & it burns well at 1x. Tests fine too. It was from the bargain bin (damaged packaging) so I dodn't mind spending the $5 on it for the 50 pack. Other than the pack of Sony I used & the Gigabyte Ritek the only 16x I've found thats burns well in the recorder is TY. Whats interesting is another pack of Ritek with the same F-1 mid code doesn't burn well at 1x so I'll use it in the computer.
