PSP 3.72 + Datel Tool Battery : downgrade first?

Just received my PSP slim and 4GB duo stick and have the Service Battery on it's way (the fat version).

I do not have access to a homebrewed PSP, so I'll be doing this all from guides and files online.

I've read that you can't/shouldn't downgrade the newer PSPs to 1.5 before you upgrade to CFW since Sony implemented some type of hardware change. Is this true?

If so, what is the proper upgrade/downgrade path to go from Sony original firmware 3.72 to the latest CFW such as 3.90 M33 and is the 4GB Duo stick supported for this 'hack'?
